The borough was formed on April 14, 1912 from portions of Union Township and Nutley Township. It is located in the New York metropolitan area. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 8,613 people, 3,849 households, and 2,611 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,912.0 people per square mile (746.4/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 97% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5% of the population

On Dec. 12th of that year, township elections were held and James Bogan became Township President with Wm. Treadwell as Deputy Township President
