East Orange is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,539 at the 2010 census. It was formed from portions of Rahway and East Brunswick Township on February 3, 1923. The name "East Orange" comes from the Dutch for "the orange grove". The first inhabitants of what is now East Orange were the Lenape people who called it Teutonicus Oranges (now called West Orange). In 1664, English colonists arrived and named the area East Brunswick after their then-home of Brunswick Township in Middlesex County. Rutgers University's old medical school was located in what is now East Brunswick until it relocated to Newark in 1847. The town started as a stop on the Atlantic Coast Railroad before becoming an independent municipality on March 10, 1923. On November 5, 1806, during the American Revolutionary War under General George Washington's orders, Commodore Nicholas Monson sent his flagship USS Constitution and its squadron of ships to relieve Philadelphia's port at Verona without firing a shot because he believed that if they did so Pennsylvania would become an Independent nation rather than part of Great Britain. That same day Delawarean Revolutionary War veteran Lt. Governor Thomas Jefferson also boarded USS Constitution and delivered a speech to troops ashore about independence from Great Britain which has been preserved as part of history both nationally and locally: Lt. Gov.-Thomas Jefferson: I cannot forbear mentioning this event which took place today;...I hope you will not forget our brethren who went down into that deep harbor with so much Trouble upon their minds...and yet we came safe out again this morning - no shots were fired! This confirms my belief that America can do great things while she continues within her proper boundaries - she has always done so....We must be constant watch lest our country be taken by force by another power; but I trust we shall not find herself forced to make any concessions thereto!

East Orange, New Jersey was founded in 1776 as a small settlement on the banks of the Hackensack River. The area that is now East Orange was part of Hunterdon County until 1834, when it became part of Middlesex County. It was renamed East Orange by its first Mayor, John A. Quarles in 1881. In 1920, the borough became an independent municipality and was designated a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. On June 15,1995, East Orange became one of four municipalities in Camden Township to become a city with a full-time mayor and City Council. The history of East Orange goes back to early days when Dutch Settlers arrived in this area from Holland in 1624-1627. They built some homes and farms along the Hackensack River which served as their launch pads for commerce and trade with surrounding towns such as Perth Amboy, Hoboken and Paterson. By 1776, English colonists had established themselves in what is now eastern Morris County and began developing land near where the Hackensack River flows into Jersey Shore Bay at present day Paramus Landing on Long Beach Island. The English settlers named their new town “Easton” after estates located east of London called Eaton House (now Oxford Street) and Hadley House (now Borough Hall). Within a few years, many other families followed suit including those from Newark who settled at Ridgefield on Monmouth Island opposite Asbury Park across from Philadelphia during the late 1700s; these immigrants were known as “Dutchmen” because they came primarily from Rotterdam but also included relatives from Amsterdam who had fled Spain during our war for independence against Spain (1700-01). For more than two centuries following its founding, Easton functioned primarily as an agricultural village with sawmills/farms providing essential goods needed for subsistence living while also hosting several churches including First Baptist Church which dates back to 1713; it remains one of only two buildings left standing onsite from that original structure! In 1920, local officials decided that it would be more efficient to divide Middlesex County into three sections based on population size so that each section could be administered separately through its own City Manager - something which had never been done before in New Jersey! This change resulted in increased business activity due to greater efficiency since businesses were no longer required to coordinate activities between sections! With this new approach came increased taxes revenues which helped support municipal services such as parks & libraries etc., without having to rely exclusively on state dollars! In 1980, Mayor Leo Marino declared July 4th “Eaton Day” recognizing all these years of hard work by our community leaders! On July 4th 1980 – just over 60 years after its inception – Easton celebrated its milestone with parade down Main Street followed by fireworks display over then Haddon Heights Cemetery! Today there are over 12K residents within our borders making us oneplexity among NJ citiesites!!
