East Orange, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 27,321 at the 2000 census. The town was formed from portions of South Orange Township and had a population of 24,569 as of the 2010 Census. East Orange is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The township was established on August 25, 1755 by Jameson Livingston and others under the direction of Colonel John Montresor. On July 1, 1834, it became a borough due to an act of the New Jersey Legislature which granted borough status to towns that are “in every way similar” to Philadelphia or Camden within 10 miles (16 km). Boroughs were abolished in 1911 when all municipalities were given city status. On March 14, 1881, three days before Rahway took over as the first municipal government in Essex County with its own police force and fire department (the first such municipality in New Jersey), EastOrange incorporated as a village. It had a population of 2233; however this number would only rise to 4646 after Rahway annexed parts of neighboring West Orange on April 14th for land value considerations only! In 1896-97 there was an earthquake measuring 3 on the Richter Scale that struck Princeton Junction about 15 minutes after sunrise causing extensive damage both inside and outside homes including widespread destruction to trees and power lines. No loss or casualties were reported however several buildings collapsed into their foundation with heavy damage done to many other objects within yards thereof including churches and other important structures not typically affected by earthquakes but still seriously shook!
