East Orange, New Jersey is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern part of the county and borders Newark to the north, Singleton Township to the east, Paterson to the south, and Rahway to the west. The first Europeans who arrived in what is now East Orange were Dutch settlers from Holland who founded a small community on high ground overlooking Little Egg Harbor Creek. In 1664, English colonists took up land near what is now East Orange and began settling there. In 1701, East Orange was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature based on then- rural areas within present-day Passaic County that had not yet been won by European settlement. In 1814, during the American Civil War, East Orange became one of two municipalities (the other being Trenton) placed under military command by General Robert Ewing that were designated as "Uniontowns." The town charter was ratified on December 10th of that year and read: "East orange Borough shall be erected into a civil township…and all property therein belonging or appertaining thereto shall vest respectively with said Borough aforesaid." Uniontown functioned as an garrison town for several years until it withdrew from federal control in 1865; however, some elements of its civilian government continued until 1868 when it merged with nearby Rahway intoRahway Township. At this time, East Orange also became known as "New Rahway Township". By 1870–71bridge over Little Egg Harbor Creek had been built between present-day Rahway and Eastern developments west of Rahway Bridge which formed today's eastern border of East Orange; this bridge connected Uniontown proper with Rahway Township before becoming obsolete in 1902 when new Route 66 bypassed both towns completely. During World War II local production for war materials (eavesdropping devices) led to imprisonment for many residents including Mayor James Japp who went into hiding after his arrest warrant was served October 20th 1942 but still managed to post bond four days later and flee capture; he would eventually be recaptured nine days after his escape and serve out his sentence at Coldwater Federal Correctional Institution where he remains incarceratedto this day. On May 5th 1924 Independence Day celebrations were held throughout much of Northeast NJ including in various communities across NJ following enactment by Governor John Pryce III laws creating official state holidays such as Columbus Day/National Guard Day etc.; these festivities occurred weeks prior due to lack thereof celebration annually occurring on these days throughout most portions of our Commonwealth since 1847 despite requests made by legislatures multiple times dating back dozens if not hundreds years! On this date many thousands participated via parades & open air concerts taking place predominantly in central cities throughout northeasternNJ…. Some believe today's holiday observances may have originated with early Morristown incident involving Philadelphia anarchists cooking dynamite & setting off charges causing $3 million damage! We cannot know for certain but experiencing those early decades more than once each year really added something special….. Happy Independence Day everyone!!!

East Orange, New Jersey is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-most populous municipality in Essex County and the most populous municipality east of Trenton. The first European settlers in what is now East Orange were Dutch farmers who arrived on horseback from North America around 1624. The name "East Orange" was given to them by Lieutenant Governor William Penn after they led an expedition through the area in 1628. In 1714, John Thomson bought land at present-day corner of High and Washington Streets for $1,000 from Nicholas Carteret. The first courthouse in what is now East Orange was built in 1729 on Front Street near what is now Middle School Avenue. The courthouse burned down in 1803 but was rebuilt and became known as the second courthouse building (now called City Hall). A fire destroyed both buildings again in 1847 but they were again rebuilt and became known as Justice Courts Building until 1906 when they were renamed State Supreme Court Building due to their affiliation with that body. In 1874, a group of men began construction of a dam across Hackensack River which would create a reservoir that would provide drinking water for East Orange and other towns downstream. This project progressed slowly because there was opposition from some residents who feared that it would enlarge Hackensack Creek too much for their convenience and pleasure park downstream along Lakehurst Road. However, eventually the project received approval from the state government and was completed by 1880s under then-Governor James Buchanan Johnson Jr.. On November 15th, 1908 – one week before America's entry into World War I – local citizens met at City Hall to choose between joining or supporting war efforts against Austria-Hungary based on conflicting reports about munitions supplies available within the United States At this meeting also took place plans for creating an American Legion chapter specifically outfitted to fight Austria-Hungary; however these plans never went beyondido stage until 1917 when members coordinated with military units throughout New Jersey to become operational under command of Colgate Commandery Military District No 1 headquartered at Newark Liberty Station GI Barracks # 553 Harrison St NY
East Orange was a borough in Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 15,821 and it is the smallest of the five Boroughs in Union County. On February 17, 1874, East Orange became a part of Bergen County when that county was created from portions of Middlesex and Essex counties.
