East Orange, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,521 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Middlesex County and the third-largest municipality by area in New Jersey after Newark and Trenton. East Orange is located on the eastern bank of the Hackensack River and straddles both banks of Route 9W which connects Newark to Princeton. The first settled areas around what is now East Orange date back to 1681 when English colonists arrived from England on the Mayflower. They founded a small village called West Egg on beans that were grown along the Hackensack River between present-day East Orange and Woodbridge Township. In 1812, following American victory in the War of 1812, George Washington granted land east of Newark to Colonel James Wilkinson for his military services during that conflict. The town's name was changed from West Egg to East Orange in 1834 upon its incorporation as a township under state law.. In 1835, John J. Stevens Real Estate Company opened up shop in what are now downtown East Orange with plans to develop alluvial soil near present day Lake Monmouth as well as other properties across what would become known as Ridgefield Park Avenue (now State Street). Stevens' company would later be joined by others who developed Ridgefield Park into one of northeasternNJ's most affluent neighborhoods until it closed its doors for good in 1960 due to financial scandals.. As township taxable values continued to rise throughthe 20th century, so too did population growth withinEastOrange; by 1990, there were over 25K residents living within its borders. This trend has accelerated over recent years with current populations topping 30K for the first time ever – making it one of NJ's fastest growing municipalities! It continued to grow as a manufacturing center during the 20th century, thanks in part to its production of munitions and other defense-related products. In recent years, however, East Orange's economy has been centered around its role as a bedroom community for New York City.
The town of East Orange, New Jersey was founded in 1788 by the merger of two small villages, Easton and Orange. The first permanent settler in what is now East Orange was Nicholas Rodgers, who moved from Rhode Island in 1785. Rodgers and his family were the first to arrive in what is now East Orange Township. In 1812, a group of Dutch farmers with their families also settled in the township. In 1814, the township was divided into three sections: North (including West Egg), South (including present-day Edison) and Central (Easton). The section that became known as Central included most of what is now East Orange Township. In 1903, a new post office called "Easton" was established in honor of General James K. Polk, who had been president at the time. It operated for more than fifty years before being replaced by an upgraded post office called "Easton Township" on October 1, 1916. On May 26th 1905, residents of both townships voted to form a single Borough which would include alluvial flats along Hamilton Avenue north of Broad Street eastward to Patterson Avenue south of Patterson Avenue; this area would be known as the "New Town". On July 8th 1907, following a referendum held by residents of both townships about whether or not to become one municipality under one name - "Easton Borough", it was decided that both municipalities should be named after their respective founding fathers: George Washington Rodgers and Nicholas Rodgers. The New Town took its name from these gentlemen and began operation on October 1st 1907.
