Bullets have been an important part of East Orange, New Jersey's history for many years. Bulletins from 1881 to present day are also available online at: www.eohs.org/. The first known shot fired in East Orange was a ball shot off a log by Samuel French on October 10, 1821. In 1827, a housewife named Minerva used a sharp piece of stone to shoot three balls into the air and hit one with her eye as she sat inside her home in Madison Street; this was the first ever firearm shooting in America. It is interesting to note that East Orange had its own rifle range dating back to 1796! In 1830, two brothers named William and John Fenton opened up a store on Main Street which became known as The Rifle Shoppe. This shop sold firearms including rifles, pistols and shotguns. Ammunition for these weapons was typically made from lead-headed puddings which were then smoked out before use. Ammunition production increased significantly during the late 1800s thanks to improved manufacturing processes and advancements in technology. By 1899, Armoury bullet production had reached 2 million rounds per month! Production continued until 1903 due to World War I-related factors (see “History of Ammunition”). During World War II, ammunition production resumed after being temporarily suspended due to munitions shortages caused by the war effort (see “History of Ammunition”). However, it was not until 1951 that Armoury bullet production again reached its prewar levels (See " dated bullet types" under " History of Ammunition"). Today Armoury bullet production continues at around 1 million rounds per month along with research and development efforts designed to improve performance across all weapon platforms including armor piercing projectiles.

This settlement served as a model for later New England settlements. During the Revolutionary War, many of the soldiers who fought in New Jersey were from East Orange. General George Washington and his army passed through this township on their way to Trenton, New Jersey on October 26, 1777. East Orange became an incorporated borough on March 3, 1835. It was located within Union County until it became part of Bergen County effective January 1, 1970. - Census data show that there are over 117 thousand people living in East Orange Borough which makes it one of NJ’s most densely populated municipalities -

In 1814, East Orange was founded by George Washington and his son John as a small village on the east bank of the Passaic River. In 1868, the Town of East Orange merged with the Township of Monmouth to form the new township of Monmouth County. The growth in business and population led to increased infrastructure needs and development in East Orange. Construction began on what is now known as Roosevelt Boulevard in 1887 and continues to this day. This important transportation corridor helped fuel economic growth in eastern New Jersey for more than sixty years. When the first Europeans arrived in what is now East Orange, New Jersey in 1609, they were following a route that ran from Staten Island to Newark. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and it was not until 1664 that English colonists moved into this area. In 1701, the British claimed this land as part of their possessions when they gained control of New Netherland. This led to a series of wars between the British and Dutch over this area. Eventually, the British relinquished their claim to this land in 1783, leaving it with the Dutch. The town of East Orange was founded in 1812 by farmers who had been driven out of Newark by Indian raiders. The first post office was established in 1814. In 1847, East Orange became an incorporated municipality and began to develop as a commercial center for eastern New Jersey. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century and by 1900 had become one of regional leaders in manufacturing and commerce. During World War I, East Orange played an important role as an airfield servicing fighter planes flying combat missions over Europe. After the war ended, many businesses located here closed down but new ones sprang up including a printing company which continued operations until 1973 and remains one of the most significant local firms today. In 1965, Mayor James Smeaton announced plans for redevelopment called "East Side Park". This project aimed at bringing new housing developments to east side streets near Rutgers University so that people could have more access to good quality public transportation options close at hand while still being able to be close enough to enjoy all that east side has to offer without havingto leave their neighborhood or city
