Dumont is located on the eastern edge of the township of Monmouth and the western edge of Lakewood Township. The first inhabitants in Dumont were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1664. A post office was established in 1714 and remained operative until 1856. The first school in Dumont was opened in 1795 and remained operational until 1857. Dumont has three sets of ZIP codes: 07623, 07701-07702, and 07703-07704. The population density was 2,554 people per square mile (1,041/km²).

The first people to set foot in Dumont were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1664 and built a small fort on the site of what is now Hillside Avenue. The initial inhabitants were farmers and their families, but by the early 18th century, there were also some traders and Merchants in the town. In 1713, Anthony Wayne founded Wayne Manor on what is now Park Row in Dumont after purchase of land from an earlier settler named Weems. In 1763, John Dumont became one of five townships within Essex County that were formed from parts of Middlesex Township (now Union City). The township had been organized by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly on December 15, 1758. John Dumont was elected as Mayor of Newark on April 3, 1763 and served until his death July 2 that year at age 75 years old. On October 25th of that year he was buried with full military honors at Westwood Cemetery in Newark alongside his two brothers-in-law George Washington and James Ketchum Jr.. A plaque commemorates John Dumont's life and service at Westwood Cemetery: "Here laid down to rest / Those heroes who fought for us / those patriots whose valor made us free." "Dumont" appears as both a given name (first mentioned 1664) and a surname (1665). One theory suggests that it originated from "dun", meaning "hill" or "mountain". Another theory suggests it comes from Old English Odinhafn which means either "(place) where I dwell/live; my home;" this could be due to its location near Perth Amboy (on present day Atlantic Boulevard), which was once known as Odinhafnstranden or Odinhafnhamn. According to OpenStreetMap data however, no such place exists within present day Sussex County - meaning that either source may be correct., So far there has been no confirmation for which theory is correct., There are several theories about how this particular name came about.; Although originally only used for men it began being given to children starting around 1700s too;; As time went on more women started getting called by their maiden names e.g Maple Leaf etc... so many people just call themselves 'Dumont' without any further thinking.,

The mills were important symbols of commerce and progress in what was then a rural area. Dumont became an incorporated municipality on April 14, 1897 following the merger of two other villages in Morris County: Rahway and West Eggertown. At that time it had a population of 2,898 people. The town's namesake, Colonel John Dumont, helped turn around what was once a struggling community by investing in mills and creating opportunities for residents to work within his industry. He also helped support civic organizations such as the Masonic Lodge #2 which donated land for public school construction and later founded the Rahway Community Library; and the football team which donatedumbing Arena to serve as their home field from 1895-1996). In recent years there have been efforts made by members of Dumont's governing body to revitalize downtown areas such as Main Street which has seen some success with new businesses opening up along its length; but overall much remains unchanged from when Dumont first attained municipal status more than 100 years ago - its small town feel combined with proud traditions like its Masonic Lodge #2 donation giving ability (the library still uses this donation facility today), its rich history (many buildings still standing dating back to early 20th century), and high quality education available through local schools like Saint Joseph’s Academy/Bishop Gorman High School which has been ranked among “America’s Best High Schools” by UPI twice (2009 & 2016).

The first European explorers to visit Dumont were Giovanni da Verrazzano and Lorenzo de' Medici in 1524 and 1525 respectively. Dumont was originally called "Saratoga" because it lay on the border of present-day New York and Pennsylvania. The name change may have been due to the fact that Saratoga Springs, New York was then a small village located near where Dumont now stands. In 1686, George Monmouth drove Dutch settlers from what is now Dumont Township and annexed it to his own county of Monmouth County; however, this annexation did not take place until 1717 when Dumont again became a township under the jurisdiction of Mercer County. In 1873, a post office called "Dumont" was established at the intersection of Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (now Maple Shade Boulevard) and White Horse Pike (now Route 9). The name change came about because many citizens thought that the name "Saratoga" would be more likely to result in an increased number of letters in its ZIP code than "Dumont". However, no increase in mail volume occurred as a result of this decision. A store opened on Main Street in 1909 which served as the nucleus for what became known as The Department Store Company which moved its headquarters from Sayreville to Dumont in 1961; according to local historian Donny DeVries there are still some remnants from that period remaining today inside The Department Store Company building on Maple Shade Boulevard just east of I-95 exit 8B/Newark Avenue northbound lane). According to the United States Census Bureau, Dumont had a total population of 5,853 as of 2010 census; all residents are considered white non Hispanic or Latino origin except one black person who lives within close proximity
