Dumont is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,936 at the 2010 census. Dumont is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first settler in Dumont was David Denton in 1789. The town was founded as a result of the Moravian Parish merger on April 12, 1803 by order of Governor John Dickinson. It was named for General Nicholas Dumont (1726-1802), who led an army against the British during the American Revolution and later served as Minister to Russia under George Washington. In 1868, Dumont had a post office while residents were still listed in Black Book 1 with "Newburgh". On February 16, 1870, it became a borough; on November 2nd of that year it became a city charter with its own government and police force. On May 7th, 1904 Mayor John Fenton proposed amending the borough's Charter to allow for female voting which failed 8-1 when all members present voted against it; this vote signaled early signs that women would not be welcome in municipal politics in New Jersey until very late into the 20th century. In 1925–1927 Mayor Harry Siegel ordered construction of what is now Riverhead Park without consulting citizens or obtaining their consent due to fear they would not support such an unpopular project because they thought it would increase taxes there instead of improving public facilities elsewhere within the city limits. This resulted in one million dollars being spent on landscaping and infrastructure improvements and no new housing being built despite promises from then-Mayor Siegel that projects like Riverhead Park would create jobs throughout the city center and help resolve social issues such as crime rates and congestion caused by cars driving into downtown streets at night causing mischief known as "the white noise" problem which continued up until about 2008 when things began to improve but remain stubbornly high even accounting for population growth over time (See: History of Riverhead Park). A referendum passed overwhelmingly by voters on June 14th 2016 asking for annexation by Hudson County failed to gain enough signatures needed to be placed on the ballot via certified mail certification indicating that only 10% or less of registered electors living within 5 miles (8 km) voted YES upon ballots mailed out prior to election day could be considered “inhabitants” according to NJ Election Law §§ 9-101 et seq., meaning no change took place inside either municipality despite rumors circulated online following unofficial canvassing results concluding much more people lived outside than inside polling places creating confusion over whether or not annexation actually occurred & urban sprawl continues unabated today despite community outcry https://www2a2a2a1ddcfe3f6b7ecccfdeeaa8baab4/.
