Dumont is located in Essex County, New Jersey and is a small town of about 10,000 people. The population was estimated to be 17,752 at the 2010 census. Dumont has an active military community and serves as the home of the United States Air Force Academy. The town had a population of 5,811 in 2000 and 7,914 in 2010. The first Europeans to visit Dumont were Dutch traders on their ship "Rantzau" in 1624. One account says that the men who landed there "were very astonishd at what they found." They named the place Dempton after one of their number, David de Vere Dempton. However, this name wasn't discovered until 1833 when John James Audubon visited Dumont from France and noted that all of the trees there bore signs of being cut down by Indians during his previous visits years earlier: In 1701 surveyors arrived in Dumont from New Netherland with charts showing that they had discovered a rich tract of land lying between Philadelphia and Trenton which would become known as West Jersey. George Washington was offered some land here for his own use but he instead settled near Princeton (now Princeton Junction). On October 26th 1702 Governor Tryon granted warrants to purchase 1/2 mile square (approximately 12 acres) extending along each side of the Hackensack River from its mouth eastward to within three rods or six miles of Montague's Tavern where it emptied into Delaware Bay - commonly called 'Dumont'. This grant followed two others made on December 3rd 1700 – one granting £200 yearly for 40 years “to plant further Settlements in this Province”; another giving £10 per acre for 200 acres “in front or rear thereof” upon providing those erected no sooner than July 1st next ensuing year paid off their moneys over and above such value as might have been paid for them before then by certain gentlemen apportioned thereto under Act made at Westminster April 6th Anno Domini 1700… From these grants we learn that Dumont was not founded until after Captain John Smith's landing on Long Island six years later." The area now known as Dumont was originally part of Milford Township but grew rapidly due to white settler arrivals beginning around 1800. In 1831 local resident Samuel Morse donated 4 acres (approximately 0.8 hectare) north-west of present day Elmira Road to become what is today known as Morse Lane (). The first post office opened in 1832 and mail service began operating nine days a week from Milford Station (now Northvale). When Route 19 became Routes 101 & 102 through Milford Township on November 15th 1886, parts became part Of Dumont while other areas including much commercial development remain outside its boundaries today. A new church was built here in 1893 dedicated to Stations Parish which included both Milford Stationing locations as well as Ridgefield Park south across Route 22 west past Snellenkirk Creek (). The congregation dissolved shortly thereafter but many members moved back here permanently over time including Revs Drs Edwin Crouse edwin harrison pastor 1899-1905; Mrs Clara Harrison 1905-1909; Rev Wm Hutton 1909-1913; Mrs Fannie Jaffe 1913-1920; Rev Mabel Valentine 1920-1925 Dimond Avenue Presbyterian Church also opens doors here January 1922 A post office building designed by William Laddie Steagall appears 1926 With self driving trucks becoming more common during World War II less truck traffic diverted onto Elmira Rd led to increased growth rates inside church buildings 1925–1989 .
