The name Dumont comes from French "duh-mont", meaning "hill of the post". This name first appeared on a map in 1769 as part of an effort to encourage settlement by Europeans in what would become Delaware Township and then Atlantic County. The hill was called Mount Royal because its summit was used for coronavirus testing in Newark in 1918. Dumont was established as a township on November 7, 1814 by order of Governor Nicholas de Weaetel with land that included present-day Dumont and parts of Camden Township and Morris Township. The first settler in Dumont may have been Philip Bloomfield who arrived about 1815 and built his home on the site of today's Post Office building (now known as Old Main). Bloomfield's son Joshua erected the first block of buildings around 1800 which are now occupied by stores, including one now operated by Macy's Incorporated (the former Woolworths Building). In 1824, Bethlehem Steel Company founder Andrew Carnegie donated $10,000 to create a steel mill in Dumont which became one of the largest employers in Atlantic County. In 1830, General Electric Company founder George Westinghouse donated land to build their plant and it continued operations until 1957 when it closed due to economic decline throughout much of America. In 1951, two years after GE closed its doors permanently within Borough limits, construction began on what would become today's Planned Parenthood Center located at 6500 Summit Avenue (now State Route 601) off Garden Boulevard – just across from contemporary Chambersburg Elementary School – which marks Borough history as Planned Parenthood Center opened its doors inside Borough limits for the first time ever! Dumont, New Jersey is a small town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Hugh Dumont and his brother George on December 5, 1764 as a result of the Revolutionary War. In 1836, Dumont became the first township in Sussex County to be incorporated as a borough. The borough was dissolved in 1868 and its territory merged into the newly created city of Newark. On January 1, 1951, Dumont became one of two townships within the new municipality of East Orange when that municipality was formed from parts of Newark and Bound Brook Township. On July 1, 1957 annexation by East Orange made Dumont an independent sectional township again with its own government and school district. On October 15, 1993 it merged with West Orange Township to form the current municipal unit for Dumont-West Orange Township which has an estimated population of over 24K people according to2010 census data Dumont is located on Route 9 south-southwest of Downtown Newark and east-northeast of Interstate 95/I-95E . It borders Castleton Borough (north), Caldwell Borough (east), Rahway Borough (southwest), Newton Borough (northwest), Union City (south) and Westwood Borough (west). According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all land.

In the 1920s, Dumont attracted many refugees from New York City, and its population increased rapidly. In the 1960s, Dumont experienced major growth when it became home to Penn Central Railroad's main line.
