Dumont is a borough in the U.S. state of New Jersey, located on the Monmouth County line. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 5,821, making it the second-most populous municipality in New Jersey after Camden. Dumont is also home to Park Ridge High School and Montclair State University. Dumont was established as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on November 1, 1824. On February 14, 1826, it became a borough due to its incorporation as a separate municipality by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly that day. The Borough of Dumont was created from portions of two other municipalities: North Caldwell Township (now part of Hackensack) and South Caldwell Township (now part of Perth Amboy). The first mayor of Dumont was Amos Doolittle and he served from April 25, 1830 to May 17, 1831; John Prentice from October 12th 1833 until his death on September 3rd 1834; John Haggerty from December 12th 1840 until his death on January 26th 1841; and James Cushing from March 13th 1850 until his death on October 6th 1850. In 1863–1864 Abraham Lincoln met with representatives from eight municipalities in what is now Middlesex County during his Visit to America tour when he made recommendations for new towns in that county so that central government might be moved away from Newark to more centralized locations across America. Afterward Lincoln recommended Dumont for inclusion within this new section because it had a population under 10 thousand at the time and "the situation has since been improved". Borough President Benjamin Biddle appointed Charles Fenton as recorder in 1865 who stayed until 1870 when he resigned over differences with Mayor Beasley about land transfers within town limits which later led to litigation between them both which resulted in victory for Beasley over Fenton In 1870–71 Joseph Lapp took office as mayor followed by Nathan Phelps who served two terms before leaving office effective December 31st 1872 due to ill health From 1886 through 1902 there were only three mayors with Alfred Jantz serving as acting mayor each year while Councilman Julius Weis held office
