The community originated as a small Dutch settlement on the south shore of Monmouth Bay and was first named "Dumont" after Colonel Nicholas Dumont (1668–1731), an Englishman who fought in the American Revolution and became one of the most prominent patriots in New Jersey. The name may have been derived from Dutch words meaning "craggy peninsula" or "point out." In 1814, Colonel Dumont's son Joshua offered to give up his share of land in what would become Dumont Township for $1 per acre (0.50 per mile). This donation helped make Dumont one of the wealthiest towns in New Jersey. In 1824, John A. Smith purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha) north of present-day Dumont from Colonel Nicholas Dumont for $5 per acre ($ / ha). Smith developed this land into what is now known as Maplewood Township and built a log cabin called Cherry Point on it which he used as his headquarters during the War of 1812. After Smith's death in 1829, his heirs sold their interest in Maplewood Township to George Washington Downing Jr., who renamed it Washington Heights and added streets such as Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue to coincide with nearby Washington D.C.. In 1839, Robert Morin sold 4 acres (2 ha)of land northwest of present-day Dumount to Jesse Pemberton for $10 per acre ($ / ha). Pemberton founded Morrisania on this property which became one of the largest villages in Mercer County. According to village records, Pemberton had 628 residents by 1860 when he disbanded it due to financial difficulties; however, its successor companies continued until 1907 when they merged into Burlington Borough which still has its own post office and ZIP code today. In 1863–1864 Daniel Webster bought 2/3rds (1/3 rd)of all remaining shares belonging to Morrisania Associates Limited Partnership which controlled all aspects of life within Morrisania including voting rights for Village Councilors. When Webster became Ulysses S Grant's Vice President he assigned James Hoggstreet Sr., an old friend from Morrisania Associates Ltd., to beSG Deputy Assistant Secretary at War under Reconstruction – making him America’s first White House Press Secretary.Hoggstreet Papers(19th century).
From 1865 through 1870 Hoggstreet managed press operations near both White House East Room and West Wing.

After Grant resigned from office Hoggstreet continued managing press operations until about 1880 when he moved away because there was no government money left available for him.
He died unmarried at age 86 years on September 3rd 1902.
