The first firearms in Dumont, New Jersey were rifles and pistols. The first gun sights in the town were crude wooden sights that could be seen only from a very close distance. By the early 1800s, however, people in Dumont had developed some rudimentary gun sights. One of the earliest versions of a modern rifle sight was invented by Captain John Peede of Moorestown, NJ. This device consisted of two small circles that could be seen at a range of about 25 yards. It was not until 1824 that a more sophisticated design, known as the “Peede Gun Sight” was created by Captain John Peede and his assistant Lieutenant George Biddle. This new sighting system consisted of an elevated armrest on top of which three small circles could be placed to indicate the target's position at any given point within 15 yards. It is interesting to note that this new sighting system was actually inspired by British military firearms used during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1849, Captain John Peede passed away and his son-in-law Lieutenant George Biddle took over his company's manufacturing efforts forgun sights in Dumont. Dumont is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Dumont were Dutch mariners in 1614 who named it "Dundonnet", after a small creek that flows through its center. The name was anglicized to "Dumont" by John Dumont, an early settler and one of the promoters of the Dutch colony in North America. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1701 and named their town Gloucester because of then-Gloucester County's location on the border between Essex and Middlesex counties. In 1802, Dumont became a township, based on land patented to him by George Washington as part of his Homestead Bill. On May 1, 1824, it became a city when it adopted a charter from the state legislature; however, it reverted to township status upon incorporation as a city under New Jersey law. In 1902–1903, Dumont annexed parts of Hackensack Township (now part of Union City). A steel plant opened in Dumont during World War II and continues operation today as JDS Steel Corporation with over 4500 employees including 400 scientists working on research projects related tosteel technology and manufacturing processes; making it one of the largest employers in Mercer County outside of Paterson and Newark. After years of decline due mainly to manufacturing layoffs throughout much of the late 20th century following technological advances such as automated production methods which made steel more affordable than ever before (less labor needed), Dumont experienced growth starting around 2000 characterized by high-technology firms moving into or expanding into new downtowns near major highways like Route 23/I-95 while other businesses moved out onto less traveled lots closer to housing developments such as Cherry Hill or Paramus NJ which had started developing rapidly adjacent to this newly growing industrial cluster

The borough was founded on March 2, 1814, by Nicholas Dumont and others as a part of the township of Morris (then Dumont Township). On July 1, 1838, it became a part of Newark. Dumont was incorporated as a borough on November 3, 1938. The borough's original name reflected its location within Morris County: "Dumont" comes from Dutch for "hilltop". On April 4, 1924, the first public housing project in the Borough was built at Elmwood Avenue and Halsey Street - this was also known as "The Elmwood Project". In 1957-58 an addition to school No. 11 in Dumont opened - this building became known as “The Anthony School” after its developer Anthony Sennett who then served as mayor from 1959 to 1980. In 1969-70 another addition to school No. 11 – this building became known as “The Nixon School” after Ulysses Siegel who then served as chairman of the Board of Education from 1970 to 1984 and then again from 1988 until his death in 1998. In 2013-14 an addition to school No. 12 – this building became known as “The Rothman School” after its developer Irving Rothman who then served as mayor from 2014 to 2018 and since has been chairing Borough Council meetings since 2018 until he resigned effective October 1st due to term limits set forth by state government which will now allow him only three years total office time before he must step down effective January 1st 2021 which would have ended his current Borough Council term had he not resigned
