Dumont is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from Dutch de vlugte (the "vague"). The first Europeans to visit Dumont were the Dutch in 1624. The area that became Dumont was part of what are now Mercer and Essex counties until 1795, when it was merged into Sussex county. Lumber companies began arriving in the area around 1820 and by 1840 had cut down over of forest. By 1870, the mills had produced 1 million board feet of lumber each year. The industry declined during the Panic of 1893 but restarted shortly afterwards with an investment from George Rockefeller which led to a new era of growth for Dumont's millers and their families. In 1940, all but one of the remaining mills closed because of World War II; however, they reopened after the war as small-scale manufacturers again. Dumont is located on Route 206 east-northeast of Trenton and west-southwest of Newark. It is bordered by Clinton Township to the north, East Brunswick Township to the east, North Brunswick Township to the south, Hamilton Township to the west and Southold Borough to the northwest. According to 2010 Census data, Dumont's total land area is , making it one fifth of Mercer County's total land area (.14%). According to NJBureau figures released in 2018update3*, out average household size is 3 people* while median age range is 36-54 years old*. Only 6% (2 households) below poverty line while others make between $60k-$100k per year*. It originated as a small British settlement on the Delaware River and became an agricultural center in the late 19th century. Dumont has become a major manufacturing and commercial center in central New Jersey due to its location near the Susquehanna River and its role as an transportation hub for southeastern Pennsylvania and New York City. The first Europeans to visit what is now Dumont were Dutch traders who built a trading post there in 1675-1676. The town was formed from part of West Milford Township on April 9, 1839 by order of Governor David Armstrong. On July 1, 1850, Dumont became a borough with voting rights granted to it by Act of Legislature No. 511 (1851). In 1856, George Washington Downing opened the first textile mill in America at Dumont Mills. This milling industry continued until 1898 when it closed because of competition from other areas in America which had developed mills based on steam power. However, this did not mean that Dumont did not have some successful businesses during those years; many local men went on to achieve success such as lawyer Harry Marks (1902-1978), manufacturer John Prentice (1904-1991), insurance agent Averill Harriman (1920-2006) and banker Irving Bernstein (1920-1988). During World War II: The munitions plant operated by Bethlehem Steel located at the junction of Routes 31A & 3W produced more than 116 million pieces of materiel for allied forces worldwide; it also employed over 100% women.. In 1945 following cessation of hostilities all plants closing except one at Bethlehem Steel closed without any layoffs or benefit cuts for their employees save for reductions in hours necessary for rehabilitation after war occupation... After many years of failed efforts by township officials to revive Dingman’s storeownership referendum results showed no increase since last vote cast but instead support among residents themselves against redevelopment efforts despite public pronouncements otherwise [the Borough Council then passed ordinance voiding referendum results], development finally proceeded vigorously through new ownership governance including creation of quasi-governmental body known as “Civic Development Authority” with exclusive authority to develop mall area while taxpayer funded planning/sanitation/facilities remain owner operated... Finally effective October 1st 2009 all remaining former Bethlehem Steel buildings were razed leaving only open land use within existing shopping plaza surrounded by high school & college campuses
Dumont was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It ceased to exist as a municipality on October 1, 2002 when it merged with four other municipalities to form the new township of Dumont-Haddonfield.
