Dumont is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Dumont was incorporated as a municipality on February 14, 1834. It became an unincorporated community on July 1, 1960. The first settler in Dumont was John Dumont of English ancestry who arrived from what is now Essex County, Massachusetts in 1795. He erected a small cabin on the banks of the Hackensack River and named it after his home village of Dunstable in Suffolk County, England. The first post office in Dumont opened on November 12, 1836. The name "Dumont" originated with John's brother-in-law Peter DeWolfe who settled there in 1799 and named it for him and his wife Elizabeth (née Childs). Just two years later the DeWolves had another child - Joshua Augustus Dumont - and continued to use "Dumont" until 1868 when they changed it to "Huntersville". In 1872 James Aiken bought 160 acres (60 ha) of land north of present-day Dumont from Nicholas Brierly for $800; he founded the Village of Huntstown which included all but part of what is now Dumont Township. On January 10th 1865 James Aiken married Sarah Senter who also came from Huntstown; they raised six children before she died in 1901 at age 76 leaving four sons and one daughter: Jens Christopher Aiken (1876–1965), Harry Elmer Aiken (1907–1978), Morris Abramson Aiken Jr.(1920–2006), Ellen Sophie Aiken(1924–2008). Two years later their father Jens Christopher died suddenly at age 36 while studying mathematics at Princeton University during World War II; his widow Sarah took over management of their father's estate which included Huntstown and some neighboring properties until her death in 1965 aged 88 years; her son Harry succeeded her as administrator with responsibility for all those properties until 1978 when Harry passed them along to his son Morris Abramson Jr.. In 1976 Ellen Sophie married Myron Weisbrod who also comes from Huntstown whence he descended; they raised three children before she died young without any living descendants 2006. AfterEllen Sophie's death Myron Weisbrod inherited all property except for Huntstown which he sold back to Morristown Township on December 5th 2009 for $550K On March 6th 1861 Jacob Hinton purchased 2/3 interest in Abraham Levy’s tract “northwest corner”of township boundary i4 miles east of DumONT village site & thence southwesterly 3¾ miles to river bank—thus becoming owner & occupantof entire township including that partnow embraced by HUNTERDON COUNTY.—Hinton deed dated Mar 6 1861 In 1863 Elijah Coleman acquiring 8 rods lots northwesterly side stream Olcott creek opposite Hunterdon county line entered into Agreement with Isaac Allbright owning 100 acres fronting Olcott creek opposite himself 200 rods Northwesterly side stream)—Allbright deed dated Apr 3 1863 Elijah Coleman In 1865 George Washington Smith entering into Agreement with Valentine Baird purchase 2/3 interest therein—Baird deed dated Apr 7 1865 George Washington Smith On May 9th 1886 David Beardsley entered into Agreement with Edwin Post purchase 2/3 interest therein—Post deed dated Jun 25 1886 David Beardsley

Dumont was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The community was established in 1881 and removed from its original location in 1892 by the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. They built a log cabin nearpresent- day Dumont on the River Rahway. A post office called Dumont opened on April 12, 1881, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 14, 1902. The town's importance only grew after the arrival of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad in 1892. The railroad built a line from Trenton to Camden via Dumont, making it possible for people to get jobs in Camden and other towns along the way. This encouraged development of the area around Dumont, which began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century. By 1925, population had reached 513 people. During World War II, Dumont played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center due to its location at an intersection of two main highways connecting New York City with Philadelphia and points northward. The town also produced military vehicles such as tanks and planes. After hostilities ended in 1945, many of these factories closed down; however, some continued operation until they closed throughout much of 2001 due to economic conditions that have since changed). In recent years there has been renewed interest in returning some aspects of this history (e.g., tours of munitions factories).
In 1795, the land that is now Dumont was part of Burlington County. In 1814, the town of Dumont was chartered as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The name was changed to its current form in 1868.
