Dumont was founded in 1824 by colonists from New York City as a small farmingVillage on the Delaware River. The name comes from Montresor Township and Dumont Ferry. It became an incorporated municipality in 1869. The borough is named for General John Richard Dumont (1748-1825), who served as a brigadier general during the American Revolution and as president of Georgetown University. He was also buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Parsippany, New Jersey. Dumont is considered one of the most diverse and multiplatform municipalities in Monmouth County with over 30 different languages spoken in its borders including 12% Italian speaking residents and 11% Spanish Speaking residents according to2010 census results released by the Borough Council on October 15th,2010 In addition to its diverse community base it has been ranked tenth out of 10 municipalities statewide when it comes to economic vitality according to "Middletown Press" magazine's2009 report "New Jersey: Your Guide To The Economy." The borough has seen significant growth since 2000 with particular emphasis on new development around its many universities including Monmouth University ( previously Morristown College) which now occupies nearly all of Center Avenue; Liberty University which now resides adjacent to Interstate 95; and Passaic Valley University which opened up along Route 9 south of town in 2001 . This growth has led to increased business opportunities for Dumont businesses that have helped contribute $252 million dollars directly or indirectly to local economies since 2000 alone

Dumont is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Manhattan. The first reference to Dumont was in 1676 in a deed by Nicholas van der Sarght to his wife Magdalena and their three children: "Emmalynge Dumont". In 1807 it was incorporated as a township by an act of the Legislature. On February 14, 1827, it became a town when an act of the Legislature granted land for incorporation from Burlington Township. The name came from General Pierre-Charles Dumont who fought in the American Revolution and later settled here with his family. One of his sons also settled here and took on the name Pierre- Charles Dumont III. The townhome built by him remains today as one of its most popular tourist attractions. Dumont annexed parts of Caldwell Township on November 3, 1911, after which date its history can be traced back to that day's annexation process alone or in conjunction with other municipalities that had already been annexed into Bergen County during that time period including Teaneck (1891), Hackensack (1912), Maywood (1915), Northvale (1920), Monsey (1925) and South Arlington (1945). On July 1, 1951, portions of Garfield Heights were added to Dumont along with nearby Rahway after those communities' refusal to sign an ordinance pledging allegiance to America during the Korean War due to their pacifism

Dumont was founded in 1792 by John Dumont, a Revolutionary War veteran and the first settler in what is now Dumont Township. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, thanks to its location on the Susquehanna River and its easy access to transportation. In 1836, Dumont became the capital of New Jersey and it remained that way until statewide independence was granted in 1947. During World War II, Dumont served as an important military base for the Allied forces. The town's airfield played a key role in helping to win the war. After the war, Dumont experienced a rapid growth rate, becoming one of New Jersey's most populous cities. Today, Dumont remains an important cultural and commercial center for northeastern Pennsylvania and southeastern New York state.
