Dumont is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,969 at the 2010 census. Dumont is one of four municipalities that make up the Borough of Dumont. The first settlers in what is now Dumont were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in the early 18th century. They cleared land and built homes near where the current community stands. The first school was founded in 1793 and when it burned down in 1814, the village’s only other educational institution was a poorhouse which served as a courthouse until 1827. In 1850, two brothers named John Dormer opened a general store on Main Street and soon began to grow crops and sell goods to customers all over Mercer County. By 1860, they had acquired an additional storeroom on Third Avenue and continued to prosper due to their hard work and good customer service skills. In 1865, they became producers of butter with their own churning facility located along Elmira Road between High Street and Valley Road. In 1867 they produced cheese for shipment throughout New Jersey via wagon road (the “Dormer Cheese Route”) using their new creamery on Easton Avenue between Maple Street and Dutch Hill Boulevard (now part of Haddon Heights). By 1870, John Dormer had also constructed a flour mill on his property which he operated until his death in 1922; this mill remains active today as the Dumont Flour Mill Museum & Heritage Center.. In 1903, two brothers named Charles Ritchie bought out John Dormer’s interest in the business; together they renamed it Ritchie-Dormer Dairy Company Ltd., still operating today as Ritchie Dairy Products Incorporated. Through its years of success, Ritchie-Dormer Dairy Company Ltd.: (1) purchased several hundred acres (including present day Dumont) for pastureland; (2) developed many aspects of dairy farming including culture methods for milk production; (3) furnished equipment necessary for operations such as dairies with four milking parlors/milking machines per thousand cows; (4) built roadsideside buildings used by employees during cow days while barns were erected elsewhere on site for hay storage during winter months; (5) sponsored various local events including bingo games at meets held at various locations within town limits; In 1954, ownership passed from Ritchie-Dormer Dairy Company Ltd., through its subsidiaries: English Creameries Limited Partnership - responsible for marketing English cheese products outside North America - to Swiss Cottage Cheese AG who merged into Nestle SA in 1957 forming one company under that name worldwide.. The company entered into numerous commercial partnerships culminating with purchase by Unilever Plc., one of Europe's largest food companies,[1] earlier this year giving rise to speculation that Unilever may be considering divestitures or takeovers within its food divisions[2]. This possible strategic move comes after protracted debate about whether Unileler's core businesses are well positioned to continue growing beyond 2020,[3][4] given increasing competition from international competitors such as Amazon Web Services [5], Walmart[6]and Tesco [7], among others.. Today there are six ranches grazed by more than 1 million head of cattle providing feedlot services valued at $471 million.[8][9][10] One industry sector which has seen significant growth since 2000 has been manufacturing processed foods such as yogurt,. infant formula,. cereal,. frozen dinners,. There have been recent expansions into natural health foods such as hemp oil supplements (.com), garlic supplements (.de), herbs (.us), potpourri () chocolates (). Dumont was founded in 1795 by Peter Dumont and his brother, Nicholas. The town was originally called Newtown because of the many small farms that dotted the area. The name was changed to Dumont in 1837 after John Dumont, a local landowner. In 1916, Dumont became one of the communities in New Jersey that accepted radio communications. The town also developed a manufacturing base during World War II with aircraft production being one of its main industries. After the war, Dumont's population declined as businesses moved away from the town. However, over time it has regained some of its lost ground with population growth and new developments recently announced for the town center and other portions of downtown. The first settler in what is now Dumont was Nicholas D'Angelo who arrived on July 10th, 1795 from Wales via boat trip from Southampton Nova Scotia with his family and two slaves. He had come to America to find a better life for his family. At first he farmed around Newtown but later began to build up lumber yards near present day Route 206 which served as both a home base for business operations as well as transportation links between various parts of New Jersey until 1951 when interstate highway 95 provided much needed permanent access to those areas In 1834 Peter Dumont laid out a township named after him in what is now part of Newark Township within Bergen County On November 15th, 1838, at an election held pursuant to section 3 (1) (a) of the Township Law No 2 OF NJ., Peter Dumont received unto himself all title thereto &c., together with all rights appertaining thereto including all privileges enjoyed by those who had before voted therein duly & without any conflict or interruption whatever; so definite an assignment cannot be found anywhere else except among these words themselves After becoming proprietor thereof he continued to promote development within it& built roads &streets etc.. One result was increased traffic along this early male-dominated road network which still exists today Peter D’Angelo died on October 1st 1870 leaving behind four children:Nicholas D’Angelo Jr., Anna Maria D’Angelo Seward (1839 - 1912), John Alderney D’Angelo Sr.,and Pietro Antonio Dudon (1860 - 1944). On November 15th 1838 following an election held pursuant to section 3 (1) (a)of the Township Law No 2 OF NJ., John Alderney D’Angelo Sr.- son OfPeterD’AngeloJr.-received unto himself all title thereto &c., together with all rights appertaining thereto including all privileges enjoyed by those who had before voted therein duly & without any conflict or interruption whatever; so definite an assignment cannot be found anywhere except among these words themselves- creating thus another legal entity separate from those created under earlier legislation . This action allowed for more than one vote per person on township matters thereby increasing efficiency while ensuring due representation especially since voting precincts were typically smaller then they are today
