Dumont is a small town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-East Brunswick-bound NJ Transit Corridor. Dumont is located on Route 46 east of Interstate 95 and west of U.S. 9/20 exit 17A (Newark Liberty Line). The first settlers in what is now Dumont were Frenchmen who arrived there in 1664 during the French and Indian War. They named their community after General Pierre-André Dumont, Sieur de Montcalm, who had helped lead the French forces against the British in North America during that conflict. The English also called the area "Dumont." In 1714, George Washington came to Dumont as part of his survey for a new county seat for Sussex County; he recommended that it be at Newark because then Newark would have an easier time getting goods from Philadelphia to market. However, when Congress passed the Pennsylvania Plan of 1717 which proposed dividing New Jersey into two counties instead of one, Dumont was chosen as the new county seat and became known as "Dumont." The first post office opened in 1802 and was called "Montcalm." When Newark decided to become its own municipality in 1858, it renamed itself "Dumont" too – although residents continued to call themselves "Montcalmians." By 1920, only 1 percent of all letters sent to senders were in English; most were written by people living near Trenton or Princeton Junction with messages such as " Report bad news from your home country." In 1951, Dumont amalgamated with East Brunswick Township to form a single municipality which still conducts business under that name today. The original boundaries for Dumont had been slightly different than those currently used; however they remain largely unchanged since then save for some changes made along Route 46 due to realignment within Sussex County following Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. As part of statewide government reform enacted by Governor Christie in 2011–12,[1] all municipalities within New Jersey must adopt an operating budget ordinance specifying how much money each municipality will receive from state coffers based upon its population size multiplied by its percentage share within the larger municipal entity[2]. Under this system,[3] DumONT received $686 per capita fromstate coffersin Fiscal Year 2016 (the most recent year for which data was available).[4] This compares favorably with neighboring undistributed townships like Plainsboro ($2,521) and South Brunswick ($2,924), both located outside of Camden but within commuting distance of DUMONT through I-95 or Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus respectively.[5][6][7][8][9]

Dumont was founded in 1724 by Peter Dumont and his brother, Nicholas. The first settlement at Dumont was on the corner of Court Street and Liberty Street. In 1728, Nicholas Dumont donated a piece of property at the corner of Chestnut and Market Streets to form what is now known as the Dumont School District. The school district served students from Dumont until 1922 when it merged with Newark Public Schools. The town was part of New Jersey until being transferred to Pennsylvania in 1802. The town was named for General James Knyfe, who fought in the American Revolution. Dumont had a population of 100 people in 1800, but by 1830 it had grown to over 500 people. In 1836, General John Forbes burned down most of Dumont. The fire destroyed many homes and businesses including the courthouse which stood for more than 200 years before being replaced by a new building that still stands today. In 1843, General David Hunter burned down another portion of the town after mistakenly believing that Fort Mercer would be occupied by British forces during their Invasion of America campaign. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant made an inspection tour through parts of America which included stops in Dumont including one detail where he visited the burning ruins of the local courthouse that stands to this day!
The town of Dumont, New Jersey was founded by Nicholas Dumont in 1764. The community was originally known as Easton. In 1846, the name was changed to Dumont because of post-bellum growth in that area. The population grew rapidly during the 20th century and reached a peak of over 100,000 in 1950. However, it has since declined significantly and currently boasts a population of around 10 residents.
