Dumont is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,794 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Princeton-Newark-on-Hudson, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dumont was founded by George Dumont and his family in 1732 as a small settlement on the north bank of the Passaic River opposite Hackensack. The first school opened in 1735 and Dumont became an incorporated borough in 1814. In 1895, the Borough of Dumont merged with neighboring Princeton to form the current municipality of Princeton Township. The name "Dumont" comes from Dutch colonists George Dumont (1695–1768) and Hendrick Duyvil (1699/1800 – July 6, 1765), who settled there in 1732. According to one source, "George DoMunt" was actually born Henry DoMunt on October 14th or 15th, 1695 near Perth Amboy but some records show he was baptized on April 30th or May 1st of that year under English name Henry Dumount." In 1814, when New Jersey became a state , Dumont annexed acreage east of Hackensack Creek from clover landowner John Smith to become what is now known as South Hackensack Township. On March 4th 1828 Gordon MacNaughton set off a mine disaster northwest of present day Saddle Brook when his men were digging for coal while carrying noxious gas into town they made contact with water which turned out be methane gas created when earthworms ate rock exposed during mining operations weeks earlier which caused an explosion that killed 11 men and flattened homes nearby 400 people were evacuated over 48 hours most were housed at two local churches located just south of Main Street now called United Methodist Church (Old) & First Presbyterian Church (New). For many years it remained one of only two places where residents could go for entertainment purposes other than their homes and businesses closed including several theaters still extant today including Regal Cinema & Gouda's Ballroom original buildings are still standing although much damage has been done to them over time

Dumont is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,726 at the 2010 census. It was part of the New York metropolitan area until Census Day 2011 when it became part of the Philadelphia-based Combined Statistical Areas. Dumont is located on Route 83 and occupies a small peninsula on the Delaware River betweenPhiladelphia and Wilmington. The first Europeans to visit what is now Dumont were Dutch traders in 1624 who named it "Dundonant" for their leader, Hendrick de Vondel. On November 3, 1764, George Washington and his army arrived at Burgh Island across the river from what is now Dumont after crossing from Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. British General John Howe had landed near present-day Burlington Township on October 5th with over 100 men and horses in an attempt to capture Philadelphia during wintertime before moving on to attack Fort Stanwix farther upriver later that year. In 1805, when Dumont was included within Princeton Township (now West Windsor), its first postmaster was Amos Kendall. In 1821, when Princeton Township was split into two parts along with Cherry Hill Township and North Brunswick Township, Dumont became one of those two parts; however, it remained within Monmouth County until 1945 when it merged with Ocean Grove Borough to form Monroe Township. On May 2nd 1868 Congress passed an act which created Sussex County as a result of a Boundary Commission Act which resulted in eastern Monmouth County being divided into five counties: Atlantic (northwest), Camden (northeast), Gloucester (southwest), Middlesex (south) and Sussex (east). That same day Sussex County's first election took place; James Kapp as sheriff and Horatio Seymour as treasurer were both elected unopposed by all residents living within the new county boundaries including those living in Dover Heights/Monroe Township which then belonged to Camden County but eventually succumbed to Rutgers University's wishes for them to become part of their campus town plan for Newark so that they would have equal representation with other NJ municipalities within Essex county rather than having their taxes raised higher than other municipalities due to state funding allocation according to geographic size only - see also "Newark municipal government" below under "History of Newark." Following World War II many factories closed down or moved away while others chose not To relocate because they felt they could still compete without government assistance given how much more affordable housing there was available outside of cities like Jersey City or Paramus NJ etc... After some public opinion polling conducted by local businesses several years later it seems most people wanted their township back even though no vote ever happened! But this didn't stop officials from trying or raiding businesses owned by citizens who refused official recognition thereby violating zoning laws etc... Finally after 10 years efforts by community groups formed around healthcare providers such as nurses midwives etc.,County Executive Allen Dorn announced plans for a referendum asking township residents if they wanted back their township status quo or if they wanted something more like say city council members where each resident has three votes instead of one... Although polls showed almost 60% support restoration of township status quo against only 30% opposing proposal majority voted yes nevertheless this never happened because Dorn vetoed any motions made proposing returning municipality status quo...
