Dumont is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The first ammunition factory in Dumont was built by John Purdy in 1827 and operated until 1865. The first shot to be fired from a cannon in America was immediately following this factory's inauguration on September 3, 1827 when troops of Commodore John Stevens bombarded the British vessel "Queen Charlotte" off Sandy Hook Point with 100 rounds of small-arms powder and ball. In 1848, George Stephenson built and opened the first railroad into New Jersey from Philadelphia to Trenton with 1,000 rounds of artillery ammunition train each way. This brought new life to a town that had been dormant for over twenty years due to prohibition issues. In 1850-1851, Dumont's population exploded when it became home to one of two Mechanical Gun Works in America – one run by Asher Weitzel & Co., manufacturers of breech-loading guns for use by militias across North America; and the other being founded by Nicholas Day & Company (later renamed Winchester) which manufactured firearms under license from European manufacturer Royal Dutch Shells. Ammunition production increased rapidly during these years as cannons were converted from muzzleloaders into breechloaders – this process being completed by August 1830%. “The production at Dumont increased very much because there were now two manufactories manufacturing small arms ammunition within easy reach for all parts of North America...The increase also came about because firearms having been hitherto muzzle loading were now converted into breech loaders and this process was accomplished relatively rapidly through advances made in technology." - Edwin Miers

On February 11, 1686, Englishman John Montresor built a mill on the Hackensack River east of Dumont for his forces during the English Civil War. The mill power enabled Montresor to defeat General Philip Freneau at White Marsh on October 20 of that year with only a few losses to his own men). In 1705 Daniel D’Angelo bought 10 acres (40 hectares) of land from Nicholas Soares for £360 (about $7000 today). he erected an orchard and two gristmills thereon which became known as D'Angelo's Grains Mill." In 1859 Abraham Lincoln visited Dumont while campaigning for president and attended a public meeting at which he pronounced the name "Dumont" too hard to say without sounding like "dune". For years afterwards people said they could not pronounce it properly because its ending -nt- made them sound like they were saying "-n-t-o-h". Finally they gave up and started calling it "Duncansville". On September 26th 1870 Michael Kelly established Kelly's grocery store on Main Street in present day Dumont Township. That grocery store served as the nucleus around which other businesses sprung up over time such as Mr. Justice Kapp’s dry goods store (1885), Mrs. Hickey’s bakery (1910), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1915), Present Day American Legion Post 910 (1963), Pohl’s gas station and restaurant (1978) etc.. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. The Hackensack River forms most of its eastern border; however part of its western border also coincides with that of Princeton University

This was probably done by groups of men who would then compete in a race to see who could shoot first. As handguns got better and better, it became necessary to provide more accurate firepower in order to protect people and property from enemies or animals. This led to the development of artillery, which is basically a large group of firearms that can be used for ranged battle or target shooting. The first cannons were made out of heavywood (a type of tree)stocks with metal tools mounted on them in order to fire cannonballs or shot from a distance (see Figure 1). Loading an artillery piece was not an easy task since there was no means at that time for anyone other than those in charge to bring ammunition into battle alive! It took many years before any form of automatic loading devices were developed so soldiers could easily load their cannons with fresh rounds without havingto reload every time! Automatic weapons like rifles today use breech-loading mechanisms instead where cartridges are fed into a magazine until it is full, which then feeds into the barrel
