Dumont is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,783 at the 2010 census. Dumont was founded by Loyalists who had fled to America during the American Revolution. It is located on the north bank of the Raritan River and includes portions of Dumont Township and Mount Olivet Borough. The first Europeans to visit what is now Dumont were French missionaries in 1664. The area was part of Dutch New Netherland until it became part of English Jersey in 1674. In 1714, Colonel James Moore built a mill on the right bank of the Raritan River at present-day Dumontville. A post office called Mooretown was established in 1716, but it closed without notice in 1718 because there were no customers for its mail. In 1812, John Smeaton erected a brewery on Main Street near where present-day Highland Avenue and Market Street are today; this became known as Smeaton's Brewery or "Dumontville". In 1825, Jesse Wertheimer purchased land from Reverend Daniel Webster for $6000 which he used to build Wertheimer's Mills east of present-day Dumontville Road and turn it into an agricultural center with four homes for each family resident; these mills continued operation until 1908 when they were replaced by modern steel mills. In 1868, Philip Rahilly purchased land adjacent to Wertheimer's Mills from him and turned it into Rahillyowneressee Park which included a football field that remains today as one of the largest park areas in Hunterdon County. Rahilly also developed several housing developments including Hope Gardens (now known as Westchester Village) on Prospect Avenue southwest of downtown Dumontville and Forest Hills south of Interstate 95 betweenpresent-day Mountain View Boulevard and Route 22 near Milford Haven Beach (later renamed Oceanport). The Rohrbaugh family ran their toy store across from White Sands High School from 1928 until 1984 when they sold it to David Glassman who operated it as Weisenthal’s Toy Store until 1986 when he donated it to Princeton University’s Gallery Museum where it has been displayed ever since.

It is located on the southern edge of the township of Dumont and north of Parkersburg. The first settler in Dumont was Nicholas Dumont who arrived in 1740. There were only 10 households in Dumont when it first appeared on the map as part of Middlesex Township. In 1825, Dumont had a population of 970 and by 1828 had increased to 1,000. In 1834, a post office called Dumont was established with a population of 1107. In 1845, it had an estimated population of 2,500; however this number decreased to 1,516 by 1860 because of increasing calls for mail service from larger towns such as Philadelphia and Camden which were burgeoning due to their new industrial growth. By 1870 there were just 336 residents remaining in Dumont with its mailing address being Haddonfield NJ 08022-0001. Dumont declined during the mid-1890s as automobiles became increasingly popular and more people took public transportation instead thereof driving into smaller towns like Paramus or Union City which could now be reached easily by car or train. The last resident left Dumount in 1944 when Haddonfield moved out annexed by Jersey City making it one small township within one large city Limits!
