Dover, New Jersey is home to one of the most significant shooting traditions in the United States. The Gunnery and Firearms School was founded here in 1835 by Captain John S. Armistead and Professor Samuel P. Morin. It became Dover Naval Air Station in 1944, and today it is a national center for air rifle shooting. The school offers instruction to both novice shooters and veterans of all levels of experience, as well as scores of shotguns and pistols to those who wish to learn how to shoot targets at long distances. There are also two ranges at NAS Dover – one for small-bore target shooting, which has a range capacity of up to twenty-five rounds per gun; the other for larger-bore target shooting, which can accommodate thirty or forty rounds per gun. The Gunnery and Firearms School has produced many famous shooters over the years, including Adolphus Czolgosz, Bill Jennings, Joe Rosenthal, Dick Schofield and Philip Morris Cooley Sr. among others. Today there are more than 1,500 students enrolled at GFS – seventy percent of whom come from outside Delaware County! Manyshooters visit NAS Dover on summer days when they are unable or unwilling to travel far away to participate in local NRA competition events such as trap shoots or skeet tournaments; however, even duringummer days the facility remains jam-packed with shooters from all over the country!

Dover, New Jersey is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,163 at the 2010 census. Dover is the second-largest town in Sussex County after Asbury Park and is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. It lies on the Delaware River between Newark and Camden Counties to the west and Chesterfield Township to the east. The land that would become Dover was first settled by Native Americans in 1715. The first European settlers were Dutchmen who arrived in 1664. They called what they found "Haven" for want of a better name and built a small fort there until 1669 when they abandoned it because of raids from the Indians. In 1714, two brothers named John and Nicholas Wright bought some land from nearby Ambria Township for £600 ($10,000). They named their new township "Dover". When New Jersey became an independent state on December 14, 1777, Dover was one of nine townships in Sussex County chosen to be included within its boundaries. On January 1st 1802, Dover incorporated as a village under the direction of Mayor John Witherspoon with a population of just over 100 people. That same year saw protests against Andrew Jackson's inauguration as President due to his support for Indian Removal policies which were then being implemented by George Washington; this led to Witherspoon's resignation from office after only three months in office. This event helped spur development along Route 30 which ran through town center making it easier for goods and travelers to reach both Newark and Camden without having to go through Philadelphia or Trenton. In 1824, Dover had a population of 2200 with 150 houses; however this number decreased rapidly due largely to competition from neighboring Asbury Park which had multiple churches (and also became much larger thanks to increased traffic) as well as increasing social tensions caused by Knowlton's Rebellion: during this time period there were several skirmishes between local farmers and Loyalists/Americans during various uprisings throughout New Jersey (the largest known insurrection being undertaken by John Woolridge’s “People” against British forces at Grays Harbor on October 15th 1825). On February 3rd 1830 Anthony Schuyler donated 7 acres (2800 m2) north of Main Street & west side approach road ([now Interstate 280]) on Hackensack River Valley section grants #838 & 841 from his estate southward including all improvements thereto since conveyed except said 7 acres wherein he died intestate & left no heir apparent but vestiges thereof continued according as follows: 6 lots upon river bank extending northerly 9 rods; lot 5 northeast thereof 8 rods long & wide 4 rods broad x 2 ½ rods deep starting at point where high water mark now meets stream about 20 feet below low water mark rising thence graduallly 12 feet above low water mark thence gradually down 12 feet more than 12 feet below original high water mark forming an eastern boundary line with lot 4 northerly opposite said boundary line thence easterly 6 miles parallel westerly trending generally NE&Wgradientarily down into Hackensack River Valley until reaching source where river enters Atlantic Ocean near Monmouth Junction NJ
Dover was founded in 1764 by General George Washington and Colonel Isaac Norris. It became a town in 1828. The first post office was established at Dover in 1829, and the first store opened in 1830. In 1860, Dover had a population of 26 people.
