This event helped lead to increased development around that location due to military needs for defense against Indian attacks. As more settlers arrived in early 1830s along Route 22 from all over New Jersey and Pennsylvania into central Monmouth County, they began looking for a place to settle down and form an agricultural community like those existing around Atlantic City or Perth Amboy NJ.. On October 6th 1830 James Auchincloss purchased 7 acres (28 ha) southwest of what is now downtown Dover from Nicholas Pevsner for $1/acre (0·60 €/ha). One hundred years later this parcel would become one of five blocks within which created downtown Dover based on Act No 2118 entitled "An act providing for restrictions upon Sunday trading within certain limits" passed December 15th 1908 - thus becoming known as "The Great Streets Project" On November 25th 1870 commissioners arrived fromMonmouth County with instructions to create a new township consisting primarily of farmland with no townships having more than 5500 residents at that time... The commissioners met again on January 4th 1871 to discuss how best organized it should be and chose four streets - Market Street NW corner with Cedar Avenue SE corner; Bridge Street NE corner with Courtland Avenue SW corner; Front Street SE corner with First Avenue SW corner - these became today's streets names: Market Street NW Corner Courtland Avenue SE Corner Bridge Street NE Corner First Avenue SW Corner Dover Township was created from portions ot Monmouth County including parts east ol Clayton Township & west ol Kenton Township & northeast ol Oceanport Township
