Collingswood is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. Collingswood is home to Collingswood High School and Collingswood Municipal Center. It is also the site of the annual Hempfest Festival which takes place on July 4th and 5th. The town was first settled by English settlers in 1781. The name "Collingswood" was derived from one of the original grants made to Samuel Coles by Governor George Washington for his assistance in suppressing Indian raids during the Revolutionary War. By 1802, all of Middlesex County had been organized into four townships: Bergen Township, Hunterdon Township, Passaic Township and Somerset Township; so that Collingwood became part of Haverford Township within Somerset County. In 1869, collinswoods were established as post offices within each township; so that there were now eight collingswoods located within Middlesex County alone (not including Haverford). In 1903, an act was passed entitled "An Act To Promote Agriculture And Commerce In The Borough Of Collingwood", which authorized the erection of a market hall and other public improvements in what had been known as "Old Town." During World War II, many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany or assisted with military operations such as peeling potatoes for JU-88 planes or helping build airfields across New Jersey. Many civilians died in concentration camps around Europe after being taken prisoner-of-war by the Axis powers during World War II; however, few people from Collingwood survived those horrors. After America's entry into World War II – when vast numbers of Americans followed their president's call to fight – many men and women moved back to their homesick older siblings or parents who had returned home early from fighting in Europe; but some new families also decided to move back into Collingweston after finding out about its wartime history and history museum located inside Old Town Hall on Main Street - open every day except Mondays since 1971! On July 17, 2014, the manufacturer of tasers, Browning Arms Company Inc., announced that they had filed a patent application for a "smart taser" device. The patent application was filed in the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is titled "Taser electrode technology for smart devices." The patent application describes an electric weapon that can be used to stun or kill people. This device would use electrodes on the user's body to stun or kill them, rather than using traditional methods such asrapnel or shooting. Browning Arms Company has not released any details about this project yet.
Collingswood is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Fordsville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Collingswood were Dutch settlers who arrived during the 16th century with their ship "Nieuwkomer". The first recorded settler was Nicholas de Valk, who purchased land from John Woolridge in 1660. In 1727, John Ewing and his brother James bought two tracts of land from Nicholas de Valk for $2 per acre. These two tracts formed the nucleus of what would become Collingwood Township. In 1819, George Washington and his family came through Manchester Township on their journey from Mount Vernon to Philadelphia. When they reached Collingwood Township they stayed at the home of Joshua French and his wife Anna Maria French until they could find a more permanent home. On September 12, 1819 (the day after George Washington's birthday), Joshua made a presentation to trustees of the township for future improvements which included roads and public squareNear where he lived today stands one of these early structures - collingwood square - still in use today by Collingswood Borough officials as their office building. Joshua French also donated some land along Wawa Avenue (later known as Route 22) which became known as Frenchman's Run because it ran parallel to that route near present-day Weequahic Road/Route 22 interchange). This original donation has been commemorated with a small park located off Frenchman's Run next to Interstate 95 just south of exit 11A (I-95 & I-495). "Midsummer night" in 1824 saw forces under General Thomas Gage march into Trenton on their way to take control of New York City following its surrender at Saratoga Battlefield on July 14,1825 A group including Captain David Duchaine went into town seeking supplies for Gazebo Tavern where Gage was spending the night; when found by local farmers they brought him back into town without further incident." After years living amongst nearby farmers and working side by side with them, DeValk & Co., merchants established themselves on Main Street between Clinton Boulevard and Market Street circa 1830; this area now forms part of downtown Collingswood." By 1840 there were 137 people living inCollingswood according to US Census records." In 1850 there were 419 residents according to US Census records." On December 1st 1860 Samuel Boardman purchased 8 acres east of present day Route 902 from David Lazarus for $200 cash only." Mr. Boardman had come downriver from Lebanon via Trenton while attending Princeton University; he intended eventually settling in this area himself but decided against it due to lack thereof development opportunities." From here Mr. Boardman ran several miles westward past current day East Brunswick before reaching his final destination: Hequahic Lake within today’s boundary lines of East Brunswick Township which then comprised much larger portions than what comprises our present borough today...Today’s boundaries are about midway between those originally chosen by Mr Boardman – east across Woodbridge Creek towards Rutgers University Cemetery spot then south along Rt 902 until he reached Hequahic Lake - or so we believe" According to web site map created 5/15/2006 by borough historian Arthur Pappas It should be noted that although aspects of this story may be based upon true events if tamperedwith collingswoods History will not reflect accurately
