The name "Collingswood" comes from two places: Collingwood in Yorkshire, England and colling wood near Canterbury in Kent, England. Collingwood was first settled by English colonists in 1684 as a small village on the western border of Middlesex County. In 1881, it became a separate township based on its own land grant from Sir John Moore. In 1892, Collingswood annexed what were then portions of Camden Township (now part of Philadelphia) to form a new borough with its own government and school district. In 1923, it annexed the adjacent borough of Passaic to form another new borough with its own government and school district; this annexation resulted in the current name for Collingswood-Passaic Borough. As of the 2010 Census, there were 8,874 people living inCollingswood-Passaic Borough; 2% more than the 7,995 people living in Middlesex County as a whole but 5% less than the 9,315 people residing inPhiladelphia metropolitan area. The racial makeup of Collingswood-Passaic Borough was 94% White (non-Hispanic), 3% African American*, 1% Native American*, 0% Asian*, 0% Pacific Islander* and 1% other races*. *This number includes all citizens who self-identified as either white or black according to their last four birthdates

Collingswood was once a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is now an incorporated city located in the southeastern section of the state. The population was 22,857 as of the 2010 census. Collingswood is one of several former towns in Middlesex County that have been annexed byNew York City since 1965. The original name for Collingswood was "Lafayette". The first settler in what is now Collingwood Township was Nicholas Lafitte, who came from France in 1738. He built a small cabin on the north side of the creek called "Ridge" and named it Lafayette after his native country. In 1793, John Stevens bought land at Ridge and founded Stevens Point on the site of Lafayette's cabin; this became Stevens Point Naval Shipyard. In 1814, Alexander Hamilton purchased some land east of present-day downtown Collingwood from Nicholas Lafitte for $5,000. This area became known as Hamilton Heights and soon afterwards developed into one of New York City's most fashionable areas for wealthy immigrants from Europe (the high rises seen today were not built until much later). Many well-known people lived here during this time including James Kapp and Cornelius Vanderbilt Sr.. In 1828, John Atherton sold his interest in Hamilton Heights to fellow Currency Merchant Simon Cameron for $10,000; Cameron renamed it "Camerontown." In 1830, Anthony Wayne bought land north of present day Cherry Hill Road from Cameron for $2,500; he renamed it Wayne Manor after his father-in-law General George Washington Carver (who had donated many acres to Wayne Manor). In 1835, residents voted to incorporate as a city under the name Camden; Collingwood received its charter two years later. An increase in traffic caused congestion on Cherry Hill Road which led to the construction of four large brick buildings on Cannon Street near Center Avenue which served as city hall (now known as Borough Hall) and other municipal offices before being destroyed by fire in 1912. One building still stands: Union Station Museum which served as both local government center and passenger train terminal until 1963 when Amtrak took over operation .
