Collingswood, NJ is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Middlesex County after Newark and the eighth most populous municipality in New Jersey overall. The borough is named for Collingwood, a small town located within its boundaries. The first European settlers to Collingwood were Dutch farmers who arrived during the 17th century. The area now comprising Collingswood was part of Perth Amboy Township until 1866, when it became part of Middlesex County. In 1873, a group of English investors purchased 2,000 acres (0.8 km²) of land near what is now Collingwood from the Dutch owners for $1 per acre ($25 total). They named their settlement "New Amsterdam" after their new home country but soon abandoned it due to difficulties with disease and poor soil conditions. In 1888 they again renamed their settlement as "Collingwood", after one of their earlier holdings in Perth Amboy Township which had also been abandoned there by its previous owners. In 1916 an act was passed by the New Jersey State Legislature which designatedCollingwood as a borough; this designation applied only to municipalities within Middlesex County and not to any other municipalities in New Jersey outside of that county. Borough status never came about because all other municipalities within Middlesex County are townships or villages governed under terms different from those governing boroughs - including elections being held at township level rather than at municipal level as is customary inNJ local government affairs; moreover, no referendum ever took place to change this fact despite numerous attempts by residents groups and even members of the Brooklyn-based Borough Council to do so throughout much of the 20th century! The first mayor of Collingwood was Cesar Chavez who served from 1920-1924 and 1928-1932; he was succeeded by James Ahern who served from 1932-1939 and 1947-1950; he was followed by John Juhl who served from 1950-1959 and 1965-1969; then Harry Levinthal who served from 1969-1974 and 1977-1981; finally Frank Mazzuca who served from 1981-1989 effective November 1st 1989 until his resignation effective December 15th 1989 following a campaign against him by then Borough Council Member emeritus Harold Feldman (a Democrat). Borough status never came about because all other municipalities within Middlesex County are townships or villages governed under terms different from those governing boroughs - including elections being held at township level rather than at municipal level as is customary inNJ local government affairs; moreover, no referendum ever took place to change this fact despite numerous attempts by residents groups and even members of the Brooklyn-based Borough Council to do so throughout much of the 20th century! In recent years however some residents have resumed efforts towards achieving borough status due to various reasons such as long range planning ideas put forth by community activists which have yet to materialize into reality while things like infrastructure needs seem more pressing for certain areas such as commerce & education etc.; furthermore annexation proceedings have taken place for properties located west/southwestof Collingwood Center where development has been proposed on what would once be open space & agricultural land whereas annexation proceedings have yetto take place for properties located east/northeastof collingsWOOD CENTER where development has been proposed on what would once be open space & agricultural land! Finally some feel that given that collingswoods current amenities surpass those enjoyed by many townspeople elsewhere within NJ (& even beyond), incorporation into another larger municipality may well be considered an option if nothing else!!

Collingswood is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2000 census. Collingswood was formed on February 14, 1871 from part of English Township. The name of the village and township were both derived from the colling tree which grows abundantly in the area. The first Europeans to visit Collingswood were Dutch traders who landed there in 1624 as part of their explorations of what would become New Netherland. In 1714, George Washington passed through Collingswood on his way to battle at Trenton and noted the beauty of the town and its abundance of trees. In 1821, Commodore John Stockton anchored off shore in nearby Monmouth Bay and discovered oil reserves beneath the town's surface which led to its rise to prominence as a petroleum center during World War II. On July 1, 1871, Collingswood became a borough when it was merged with Plainfield Township (renamed Edison Township after Samuel Edison). At that time it had a population of 2,848 people. On December 3rd 1916 Collingswood lost its charter as an independent municipality due to lack of voter support; however it regained it on January 1st 1917 when Plainfield Township re-incorporated as a borough under state law without losing its charter privileges. As an independent municipality Collingswood could not levy taxes or contract out services with other municipalities but did have some limited powers such as setting development regulations and creating school districts within its borders. In 1957 Borough President Melvin Belli appointed Drastically Different Councilman Alvin Bamberger who successfully pushed for more funding for infrastructure projects including new schools and road construction while also trying to reduce crime rates by banning smoking inside public buildings
