The first European tosight of Collingswood was in 1524 when Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed up the Delaware River. In 1865, collingwoodsites created their own village located east of town along the Delaware River between Maple and Broad streets; this village became known as East Brunswick Village until its merger into collingwood in 1955. In 1907, William Fenton opened a grocery store at 5th Street and Camden Avenue within walking distance of what is now East Brunswick Village. This store would become one of Collingswoods most well-known businesses as it played an important role in developing the village into what it is today. Additionally, Fenton also served as both mayor and recorder for East Brunswick Village from 1907 to 1915 before resigning due to ill health. When World War I broke out in 1914, Fenton mobilized his grocery store employees to help sell goods needed for soldiers on military bases all over America; this effort helped contribute significantly to Collingswood's war effort efforts during those years. In 1922, George Washington Carver traveled through New Jersey on his way back home from Mount Vernon Abbey where he had been serving as spiritual leader for American Indian students there since 1916. While visiting East Brunswick Village on his way back downriver he stopped at Fenton's grocery store while en route northbound on Route 9A; this event would later be chronicled by Carver inhis book "From Armies To Academies: A History Of American Education."
