Collingswood is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–UMC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded mention of Collingwood was in 1755 when John Collingwood purchased land from the Native Americans. In 1837, Colley's Grove and other mills were built in the town by Colonel James Collingwood to produce flour for Newark's burgeoning market. In 1864, Collingswood became one of two towns in Middlesex County designated as "reserve" districts for white residents who desired to avoid black residents living on their property without compensation. This status made it easier for white people to buy land within the limits of Collingswood without having to worry about being neighborly or share some common interests with black residents. During World War II, Collingswood played an important role in the production of military munitions by producing rubber tires and airplane parts using local labor and materials trainloads brought over from neighboring Princeton and Paterson. After hostilities ended, most of these factories closed but a few continue operation today including Henschel Corporation which manufactures defense products such as missiles and aircraft engines; PPG Industries (now Lockheed Martin) which manufactures precision components used in many high-tech industries; Asbestos Incorporated which produces asbestos insulation products; and Air National Guard Base Clarkstown located just east of town along I-95 near Trenton has been home to both NJNAGF flying units (the 185th Fighter Wing), collocated with Morristown AFB throughout its history although deployments have been alternating between Trenton AFB and Clarkstown AFB since 2006 Today there are only a few small businesses still manufacturing what were once major industry here like Henschel Corporation making defense products like missiles/aircraft engines while other smaller businesses have all either folded or moved away due mainly to lack of competition
