In 1896, Mayor George Whelan banned handguns onCollingswood’s public property after experiencing multiple shootings during his term as mayor. This move came about because Mayor Whelan felt that handguns were contributing factors in crimes on City-owned land. As a result of this ban, many residents turned to shotguns for protection instead of handguns. The ban lasted for only two years before it was lifted due to public outcry. After the repeal ofMayor Whelan’s ban, gun ownership resumed on Collingwood’s public property again! Today, guns are still prohibited on city-owned land but there are still instances where shotguns are used instead because they are more effective against crime than handguns

Collingswood is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Collingswood has been inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans for over two centuries and was incorporated as a borough on March 9, 1868. The first Europeans to visit Collingwood were French traders in 1724 who named it "Aigle-sur-Mer". A much later European settlement was established by Nicholas Montresor and his brothers in 1681 as ""Montresor's Crossroads"" after they found an early route from Philadelphia to Farmingdale through collinear woods that ran along the now known as Watchung Mountain. The first settler in what is now Collingwood was John Dunn on October 20, 1784 when he purchased of land from Nicholas Montresor for $1 per acre. In 1814, during the bitter American Revolution, several Lenape Indians led by Chief Cornettoiiy attacked a white farmstead near present day Collingwood and burned it to the ground; nearly all of the settlers were killed or taken prisoner including John Dunn Jr., his father John Dunn Sr., Andrew Dunphy and their families who took flight into Pennsylvania ahead of troops under General Nathanael Greene converging on Trenton. On February 13th 1795 with passage of Act No. 775 (the "Lenape Removal Act"), which granted citizenship to all Native Americans living within three miles of any British colony or post office outside Trenton without providing equivalent compensation or assistance*, four hundred Lenape Indians were forcibly removed from their homes at nearby West Branch Landing where they had been living since 1682 and transported across Delaware Bay aboard ships called "Queen's Bounty" and "Prince Rupert". The total number transported ranged in age from six years old to eighty seven years old with many women and children carrying heavy burdens on their heads while others menfolk assisted with cooking, cleaning and fighting for survival as pirates plundered vessels off shore during this time period. Many died due to disease contracted on board ship such as smallpox which ravaged America at this time; however many also went on to enjoy successful lives among white settlers throughout New Jersey subsequent To these events Collingwood emerged as one of North America’s most promising new towns founded upon opportunity rather than surrenderage or dependence upon Great Britain* *Act No #775 passed March 9th 1868 setting forth guidelines for future removal proceedings
The town of Collingswood was founded in 1784 by the merger of two small villages, Collinsville and Livingston. The original name for the town was “Collingswood Township”, but it was changed to “Collingswood Borough” in 1852. In 1915, the borough became a part of Bergen County and was renamed Ridgewood.
