In 1847, Captains John Atherton and Isaac Bates bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land east of present day Summit Avenue in what is now Frederica Township for $2 per acre (1/120th of a hectare). Today's Atherton Road forms part of their original property line still visible today. They named their new township Collingwood after this location - with assistance from local resident James Fenton who had suggested it be named after one of his friends in London - George Clarkingham (1762-1836). Captain John Collingwood died on July 25th 1799 while serving as Commodore on the HMS Vulture during King George III's American War of Independence; he was 75 years old at the time (). Collingswood is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. Collingswood was settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the 17th century and developed as a small farming community on the east bank of the Raritan River. The name comes from colling or "a large piece of wood." Collingswood was incorporated as a town on March 15, 1868, from portions of Rahway and West Orange. The first mayor was John W. McCormick. The original town square located at what is now 15th and Maple streets served as its central business district until annexation by East Brunswick in 1922. In 1951, portions of Collingswood were annexed to East Brunswick Township; this left Collingswood with only 3rd Street as its main street and it has since been renamed Maple Avenue for historical reasons. Today's commercial districts are centered along Maple Avenue and 5th Street; these include two grocery stores (CVS/Walgreens andTarget), several small businesses, an elementary school (Grades K-6), a post office (1918), two convenience stores (PepsiCo and Dunkin' Donuts/Bagel Bites), three restaurants (Applebee's, Chili's Grill & Bar, Subway) and one motel room complex. There also sits Collingswood High School which serves grades 9-12; it opened in 1974 after the construction of nearby Easton High School which had been built for students attending neighboring Rahway High School. The centerpiece of Collingwood's downtown is the Depot Square Shopping Center which contains five anchor stores - Macy's Department Stores (Marshall Fieldmaximum Store #2), Sears Tower Records & Video Museum (#1&2) - as well as numerous smaller shops including Dress Barns (now JCPenney) and Fordham Pharmacy which closed in 2007 but reopened under new ownership in 2018 under the name Elizabethtown Drugs & More Ltd..
