The name of the borough comes from its location near the collins or wooded areas that provided cover from Indian raids during the early 1800s. In response Reverend James Hargrave organized a congregation using Session Hall which still stands today across Cedar Lane just north of present day McLaughlin Avenue On October 10th 1861 Rev Elisha Peake officiated at wedding between Miss Daisy Dixon and Mr Wm Vennet who had been her best man at her last two weddings before she married him three weeks earlier at Methodist Chapel South & Market Streets in Camden NJ – Daisy Dixon later became Mrs William Talbot Peake also known as Daisy Wright Peake). That same day taxes were levied for the first time within our borders when 2 cords light weight greenstone weighing 1 ounce each were Collected off Dayton’s Row Road just east side of present day Main Street (& these days are known as “tax stamps” ). For many years prior residents would gather round their fires every night around their coals burning whatever small items they could find such as logs or bricks thereby providing some heat until morning hours when family members would go back inside to start their own fires once more . In 1865 local builder J P Stevens started construction on what is now Riverfront Park which included several homes that still stand today including one called "The Gables" which still stands outside the park gates adjacent to McClaughen Avenue (the home currently owned by Jack Kantor Jr.). A plaque marking this spot has been placed next to it since 1970. This area soon afterwards developed into what is now downtown Collingswood while Old Bethlehem Baptist Church slowly but surely fell into disrepair becoming abandoned with windows boarded up throughout most of its remaining years until finally being demolished completely in 2002 according To Heightsedia website: "It should be noted that not all churches eventually succumbed - One notable exception being St Alban's Catholic Church located across Morristown Road from central business district)." However Rev ElishaPeake's Wedding still lives on thanks particularly to descendants living near Hanover Park working restoring/Maintaining property along McLaughlin Ave between Elmhurst Blvd & Riverfront Dr

In 1854 he married Caroline de la Garde who was also an accomplished woman lawyer and politician; she would later serve as Mayor of Newark from 1911 to 1915 and as Vice President under Franklin D Roosevelt during World War II. In 1861 Collingwood bought 2 acres (8 ha) on which he erected his own house which still stands today -today's First Presbyterian Church building was completed in 1865 by architect John A Hood based on plans by James Hoban Jr., one of American's leading architects of that era. Nicholas Collingwood died suddenly at age 73 years old on July 11th 1863 while attending an Exhibition at London's Victoria Palace Gardens; his wife Caroline survived him by 33 years and they had five children: Nicholas Jr., Augustus Mifflin (1868-1949), John Addison (1871-1952), Charles Eliot Hearst III (1873-1956), Alice MaynardHodgkin (1875-1964). Their son Augustus Mifflin would become president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1943 until 1951 while their daughter Alice Maynard Hodgkin would become a social worker and author who wrote several books about her family including "Life With Five Cousins" (1988).
