In 1978 Collingswood merged with neighboring South Orange Township to become one municipality with a total population of 14,898. The name "Collingswood" comes from two different sources: one derives from colling (a type of wool) mentioned in Dutch documents dating back to 1624 and another derivation stems from Old English cilching (a clearing), which means 'settlement'. The first reference to Collingswood dates back to 1701 when Nicholas Denys called it Calinghwaite after his estate in Yorkshire. That same year James Cook mapmaker named his new island Islay after this location when he visited Scotland on his third voyage around the world aboard HMS Beagle. By 1800 there were over sixty homes in the area and businesses such as tanneries and gristmills had opened up including such stores as Pigg's Clothing Store built on what is now Market Street between 5th & 6th Streets NW In 1868 Collingwood Borough voted not to annex any additional townships within its borders making it one of only two municipalities in Middlesex County without annexation requests; the other being West Deptford Township Accordingly on April 20th 1868 Collingwood Borough was formed with boundaries defined by North Whitehall Township lines which then ran south along Delaware Avenue until meeting again at Essex Avenue near where I-95 now meets Route 1st Street NW; thence east along I-95 until reaching South Orange Boulevard where it turned north once more becoming Collingwood Borough center On October 8th 1870 when parts of Sussex County were annexed into New Jersey due largely to flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy NJ officials announced that all townships within Sussex County had been abolished save for those located east of Track 12 Road NJ maps at that time did not reflect changes within these townships so residents therein were forced onto streets newly designated for their new location including Essex Avenue and some roads still remain today within the boundaries defined by North Whitehall Township lines

Collingwood was founded in 1771 by English settlers as Willoughby Township. The name "Collingwood" originated from a family of colliers who lived on the Paramus River in this town. The first post office was established in 1814 and the first store opened in 1827. In 1830, Collingwood became a borough and then a city in 1912. The current mayor is Joseph D'Angelo Jr.. The township had 4 schools when it formed: one for white children and three for African Americans (one farm school). On July 1, 1951, all of Collingwood merged with Newark to form the new Newark–Elizabeth metropolitan area which included all of Essex County as well as portions of Bergen and Hudson counties. In 1870-71, four men were killed while prospecting near what would become Collingswood when their horse got stuck between two cliffs; their deaths are still celebrated each year on July 4th as "The Horsemen's Day". A small fountain marks where they were found and another small park now occupies their site; today's Fuller Park also contains an archaeological museum about early Collingswood life which open every other week during summer months. In 1915-16 there was an outbreak of World War I due to munitions being shipped through Collingswood from America via train station on Long Branch Road; over 100 soldiers died from food poisoning caused by German munitions transported through Collingsworth Station that same year alone. The largest fire ever recorded in Middlesex County occurred on October 15th 1946 when 3 barns caughtfire on Indian Hill Avenue; fortunately no onewas injured but it did cause extensive damage to buildings including 5 homes which were completely destroyed (the only loss suffered by residents during World War II). On November 16th 1888 two colliery workers - John Hickey and James McNally - fell into a crevasse while working below ground level near what would later become known as Hickey Lane () after them both received fatal injuries (). Todayrestrictions are placed on walking down that specific section of roadway because of the danger posed by loose rocks & hazards created by active quarry workings currently taking place nearby
