Clifton, New Jersey is a small township in Hudson County, New York. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The first settlements in Clifton were made on the east side of the clifftop where there are now several homes and businesses. George Washington's father, Robert Morris, founded what is now Morristown on May 20th 1788 as part of an effort to purchase land from the Lenape people who had occupied it for centuries. On October 15th 1812, General George Armstrong Custer attacked and killed Chief Joseph Brant at about this time in what is considered to be one of America's earliest engagements with Native Americans. The town was named after General Custer's fiancée (and later wife), Miss Clara Barton. The first school in Clifton was erected in 1831 by Rev. John Kappes and Mrs. Ayscough Underhill. It was located on the south side of Main Street between what is now Park Avenue and First Avenue North. In 1836, Mr. Jephson built a log cabin near present-day Mt Vernon Road which served as the first post office building in Clifton Township - it still stands today and can be seen from Route 9 South when driving down Park Avenue towards Mount Vernon Road). In 1868, Drury erected a school house on School Street west of present-day Maplewood Drive while also constructing a Methodist church on Elmira Road northeast of Centerline Drive (now known as Middlesex Pike). Mrs. Hiram Monson operated the store until1896 when her son Franklin opened his own store adjacent to Mr .Hiram Monson's home until 1922 when he sold his business to Jens Grosseauer who operated it until 1984 when it became part of Bethlehem Steel Company; this site remains today as part of Bethlehem Steel Company headquarters off I-95south near exit 13A). One year later (1869), Drury built a two story frame shop building at 499 Summit Ave., just northwest corner Cedar Grove Boulevard which served as the town hall for many years until it burned down in 1957; rebuilt circa 1978 by local architect John Smeaton with assistance from Historic American Buildings Survey; still stands today across Summit Ave from where it once stood) The first blacksmith shop opened up around 1870 also serving as a grocery store until c1930s Clifton had its own postal service starting Oct 1st 1860 vernacular paper "The Courier" began publication Apr 1865 vernacular weekly "Pioneer" started publication Sep 1916
