Clifton, New Jersey is a town located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Garden City metropolitan area. The first scopes in Clifton were made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and His Sons in 1795. In 1802, David Rittenhouse bought land in Clifton to start a new rifle factory. He also built a house on what is now Main Street that served as his factory headquarters until 1892. The site now houses the Nimitz Museum of Art and History. In 1903, George Washington Carver founded Carver's Farmland Company to provide food for the troops during World War I. After the war, he donated land in Clifton to make it a community center and educationally oriented research farm known as Carver Park today. In 1925, the American Optical Society was chartered here with its first meeting being held at Carver Park on October 3rd. Today it has over 200 members from around the world who meet annually at various locations throughout Monmouth County for meetings and symposia related to optics and photonics technology as well as educational events for children and adults alike about optics topics including science fairs and exhibits etc... In 1936 local resident Willis Hargrave donated an 8x50 Schmidt-Cassegrain scope to be used by US Air Force pilots during World War II while their planes were grounded by enemy aircraft bombings campaign nearby (one plane lost its engine while flying over Clifton). This event became known locally as "The Hargrave Scope Incident".

Clifton, New Jersey is a town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,844 at the 2010 Census. It is the only municipality in Hunterdon County and it is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to settle in Clifton were Dutch colonists who founded a small village on the west side of the Monongahela River in 1682. They called it "New Orange". The area now includes Clifton and portions of West Chester Township and Camden Township. In 1795, George Washington granted land to Jameson and others for settlement as part of his General Grant lands program. Jameson named his new tract "Clifton", after Sir Thomas Clift (1684-1753), British ambassador to America during the early years of the American Revolution. Ansonia Plantations was established by Nicholas Biddle in 1801 on what are now Delaware Avenue and Clairborne road in what is now West Chester Township. He was one of several investors who purchased about 235 acres (100 hectares) of woodland near wherepresent day Haddonfield stands from John Dickinson for $10 per acre ($2/acre). The original site included seven buildings plus an orchard and millrace which still exists today as Haddonfield Mill Pond. For many years Ansonia served as an important stop on the Susquehanna Canal mainline between Philadelphia and Camden because its water could be drawn directly from Clarion Creek without being diverted through West Chester Township or other municipalities until 1835 when this connection was improved by buildingthe Paterson Canal Trail between their two towns - making Ansonia finally an independent city within commuting distance for both cities beginning on October 3rd, 1840 . In 1836, clover became available for growing here so farmers started planting oats instead of rice; this led to increased production that supported more than 20 industries by 1860 including tannery, flour milling, cheese manufacturing etc.. During World War II many businesses closed due to war shortages but overall industry growth continued with Bethlehem Steel producing USS Constitution tanks (1904) and Peddle Wheel Clothing Factory providing Army fatigues during World War II In recent decades clove farming has waned while soybean production has become more prevalent; however there are some nascent efforts towards restoring clove agriculture if desiredClifton's unique geographic location made it difficult to develop any general commerce beyond agricultural items until signer Brewing Company opened up shop downtown circa 1910 Today most residents commute into Philly or Camden via Interstate 95
