The town was first settled by English colonists in 1732. In 1812, Clifton became a Township of Mercer County. It was annexed by Philadelphia in 1866 and again by Philadelphia in 1886. In 1907, Clifton became a Borough within Philadelphia. The town is known for its producing farmers' markets and its long history of knife manufacturing, starting with Hallett & Sons Cutlery Company in 1892 and continuing through to present day bladesmiths Jegor Kappeler, Dave Sussa and Jeff Weiler among others. Throughout its history as an agricultural center - now home to some of the largest nursery yards in the country - Clifton has been a major player in knife production and trade throughout North America. Clifton is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. Clifton was founded in 1777 by Colonel James Clifton and his family. The first post office was established in 1779. The name "Clifton" comes from two meanings - "a hillock or pinnacle of land" and "a place where clover grows". The village originally consisted of only a few homes and a schoolhouse. By 1803, the community had grown to include about 150 homes and five churches. In 1814, a mill was built on the north side of Route 202 near present day Clifton Township Road 3A. This mill became an important factor in early Clifton's economy as it produced flour for local markets and also exported flour to Europe. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Confederate Lieutenant General Robert Ewell made an unsuccessful attempt to cross over the Delaware River into Pennsylvania at Trenton Junction Bridge using trains that passed through Clifton on their way to Camden (then part of Princeton). After this successful raid Ayres vented his anger against General Sherman by dynamiting several bridges across Monmouth County within days of battle at Lovellsville near Bethlehem Center – one miles east of what is now downtown ClifTON – killing four people along with wounding 16 others before he surrendered unconditionally on October 21st 1865 (the Battle of Gettysburg). After the war ended, many veterans settled in CliftonsBeach section which still retains its original name: Beachwood Heights after two prominent residents among them were George Washington Carver who bought Beachwood Hall from Reuben Waldo Evans in 1888 and Mrs Amelia Earhart who purchased Beechcrest Lane from Mr John Haddon Postell in 1912; both families are buried there today along with other notable residents such as Mayor James Rugh who served two terms beginning in 1978 until his death in 2001; state Senator Vincent Hughes during his time as Mayor; businesswoman Anne Wexler; actor Christopher Plummer; singer Lenny Bruce reside there today amongst others including current Mayor Bob Menendez In 1966, when New Jersey celebrated its centennial year since annexation by America, much attention was paid to various aspects including local history which included an exhibit at Township hall highlighted local foods available for purchase from different parts of NJ originators like Willie Dixon (from Whitehall), Sonny Bono (from Asbury Park), Joe Biden Sr., Harry Belafonte (from Englewood) etcetera around township boundaries each week throughout July & August 1966 On September 10th 1966 Republican Primary winner Clifford English won re-election unopposed defeating Democrat nominee Edward Cogliano with over 68% percent vote cast compared to Cogliano’s 30%. English resided adjacent to then known as “Dutch Kills” immediately adjacent to modern day South Streetcliff just off Utopia Parkway between Elizabeth Avenue & Dutch Kills Boulevard which would later become known as Borough Square before finally becoming Downingtown following its incorporation into borough limits on April 14th 1973 pursuant to An Act Relative To The Consolidation Of Briar Cliff And Rahway With Certain Other Towns approved by referendum on November 3rd 1970 / Pamphlet No 268 entitled “An Act Relating To Boroughsquare” Accordingly upon Clifford English’s assumption office January 1st 1967 new Boroughsquare began operation under new management with electrical service being provided by legislation enacted pursuant thereto effectuating January 1st 1967 thru December 31st 1971 Became fully operational providing essential civic services thru Village Halls Telephone Company furnished thru Maynard Smith Electricians Incorporated Brookfield Telephone Company shouldered all responsibility for lighting necessary for public use prior thereto effective July 15th 1971 thereby ending any doubt or insinuation entertained either locally or abroad respecting municipality's functions past or present
