Swivels were first patented in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The original design featured a metal pivot arm that could be rotated to change the angle of view of the weapon. This rotating arm was attached to a leather strap and worn around the waist. The first pistols equipped with swivels were made in 1807 by John Brownell and Company, who manufactured pistols with swivels as early as 1802. By 1809, all American handguns wereequipped with swivels. In 1865, Clifton Pistol Manufacturing Co., Incorporated introduced the Model A revolver which used an internal hammer system instead of a trigger pull to cock the barrel. This new design allowed for more flexibility when using firearms throughout their infantry lineups and beyond personal protection roles into self-defense responsibilities; such as law enforcement and military service pistol use. Colt Firearms also produced this firearm under license through Clifton Pistol Manufacturing Co., Incorporated until its closure in 1984.

In 1912, the Clifton Rifle & Pistol Club merged with two other local organizations - the Paramus Rifle & Pistol Club and West Orange Rifle & Pistol Club - to form what is now known as "The New Jersey Sportsmen's Association". This merger allowed for better networking among sport shooters across New Jersey.
Clifton is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,912 at the 2010 Census. The name Clifton is derived from the Two Rivers Indian Village and the nearby mountain range. The first Europeans to visit what is now Clifton were Dutch traders in 1624 who came across the Hackensack River on their way south from Morristown. They named the area "Oudehout" which means "old house". In 1675, landowner Nicholas de Graffenried purchased 2,000 acres (810 hectares) of land east of downtown from General John Bradstreet for $10 per acre. He named it Graffenriedstown after himself and his brother-in-law Sir John Carteret. One of the first things he did was to build a new courthouse and jail here. On July 15, 1764, George Washington appointed Colonel James Mooney as justice of peace for Hudson County following his inauguration as president of America. In 1795, developer Nicholas deGraffenried became one of several settlers in Clifton Township when he bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) northeast of present day Clifton Avenue from Abraham Lincoln for £5 peracre (). DeGraffenried founded what would become known as Grafenried & Company mercantile business with storerooms and warehouses on First Street between Clinton and Morris Streets before moving into buildings on Second Street between Clinton and Morris Streets in 1806 (). In 1837(), he donated an acre (a hectare or three acres) to be used for a public school in memory of his daughter Maria Mooney deGraffenried (). When she died unmarried at age 25 years old in 1847 (), her remains were interred there until 1889 when they were moved to Mount Auburn Cemetery (). In 1862 (), two brothers by the name of Knox developed a farmstead northwest of Clifton that became known as Knoxville () after them. The Knolls also patented 253 acres (11 km²) north-northeast of present day Dunellen Boulevard including much later what is now East Rutherford Township . This land included part or all of what would become Elmira Heights neighborhood today's Meadowlands section along with much later West Paterson township . In 1868(), Colburn Brothers Developments opened up with stores on Third Avenue between Clinton and Morris Streets (). It was developed by David Colburn who would go onto become oneof America's most successful real estate developers starting out with properties such as Madison Square Garden,, Rockefeller Center,, Grand Central Terminal,, Times Square etc.). In 1890 (), development began on an adjacent tract which eventually became Allentown () but this project ultimately failed due to lack thereof support from either side resulting in its abandonment during World War I(). Afterward,,,, development continued sporadicy around Highland Road just northwest cornering Interstate 95 until 1947 when it finally ended up coming full circle back to Clifton where it currently stands being called Geiger Park by locals
