Clifton is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,927 at the 2010 census. Clifton is served by the Clifton Township municipal government and by the Paramus borough government. The first gun protection history in Clifton began in 1834 when James Wetherbee of Burlington, Pennsylvania, started to provide firearm safety training to local farmers and boys as part of his efforts to promote responsible gun use. In 1847, the first regulations were created for firearms in Middlesex County under then-Governor John Cranch. These regulations included requirements that all firearms be registered with the county sheriff and that any person owning or possessing a gun must keep it unloaded at all times. In 1892–93, rifle ranges were established near Clifton Elementary School and other public places throughout Paramus Township. Rifle shooters from Paramus could now enjoy shooting against others in an “open air” environment without fear of being law enforcement or other opponents having access to their guns. In 1936–37, Gun Owners League president Harry Price erected a plaque on what is now Route 9 east of Route 287 commemorating Price’s effort to have open carry laws passed through the state legislature in order to protect citizens from criminals using handguns while committing crimes outside of committed areas where they could not openly Carry such weapons (i.e., restaurants). Open Carry Laws did not pass until 1957 when New Jersey became a Shore State due to pressure from Governor Thomas Dewey who felt that such laws would make NJ more safe for residents living on Long Island Sound as well as increase tourism opportunities for Staten Islanders living on Manhattan Beach within commuting distance of Newark Airport and Times Square/Fashion Island across the river from Brooklyn – both areas had large concentrations of Italian Americans). 2) In 1865 William Haddonfield founded Haddonfield Armory which became one of NJ's most successful arms dealers selling rifles and shotguns including model 1861 Springfield rifles used by Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War

Clifton, New Jersey is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 18,817. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area and the New York metropolitan area. The township was formed from portions of Rahway Township on December 16, 1785. Clifton is named for John Clift (1675-1736), an Englishman who founded what became Rahway Township in 1785. The first Europeans to visit what became Clifton were Dutch traders in 1678 and 1679 who made contact with some Lenape Indians living along the Paterson River Valley. The Dutch traders reported that they had found "a great country watered by many rivers" which they called Staten Landt (later renamed Hunterdon County). In May 1683, while exploring this land further north at Passaic Junction (now Paterson), Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered an extensive group of Native Americans known as the Lenni Lenape and took them back to Holland where he reported his findings to his captain general, Cornelis Kieft. In November 1701 Captain Peter Minuit explored these same lands between Sandy Hook Bay and Bear Mountain and discovered a large body of water he named Long Island Sound after Sir Walter Raleigh's flagship HMS "Discovery". On October 12th 1705 James Cook sailed into Long Island Sound on HMS Resolution and named it after him - James Cook Strait or King George's Strait after King George III of England- when he estimated that it extended from Newfoundland eastward to Nova Scotia about . In 1784 Major General John Sullivan led an expedition against the Lenni Lenape Indians located near present-day Sayreville where he killed 154 individuals including their chief Anishinaabe . The name derives from the Dutch word "klei" meaning "plain." The first Europeans to visit Clifton were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1624. They built a small fort on what is now Main Street and named it Fort Orange after their captain of the fort's company, Hendrick van Raalte. In 1702, George Washington passed through Clifton on his way to Trenton and donated land for a church and school in what is now First Avenue and Market Street. The town was incorporated as a village on December 12, 1846 by an act of the General Assembly of New Jersey. On May 10th of that year (1847), Clifton became part of the newly created Township of West Milford due to its location along Route 9 north of Newark Bay. The peak years for manufacturing in Clifton came during World War II when local companies such as Iger Manufacturing Company produced munitions soldiers needed for Battlefields around the world. After 1945 however many factories closed down leaving little residual jobs or businesses left behind which impacted negatively upon one-time residents such as households who lost all their assets because there were no new businesses coming online or those who couldn't find work elsewhere because they had no skills or experience necessary for that particular job opening that opened up after hostilities ended; this made life difficult especially since much like other towns across America few people still had retired income so they could live comfortably off their savings/property values/ investments while others continue to struggle with mounting bills & expenses associated with post-war society In recent decades however things have started starting to change again with more enterprising individuals stepping up and starting new businesses within sight & soundclothing retailers being located closer by (& even within walking distance) with service restaurants popping up near schools & movie theaters making daytrips more affordable while small mom-and-pop stores are slowly but surely becoming more popular among locals again becoming known as "'small business hubs'" Clifton has been able to reinvent itself as both a thriving community full of opportunity but also one that strives constantly upward newcomers often finding themselves drawn by its great schools, vibrant nightlife scene & easy access to everything else nearby – something special indeed!

The name Clifton comes from the English word "cliff", meaning an elevation above the water and originally applied to a small island near Livingston in Mercer County. The first settlers in Clifton were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1681. They named their community after Lord Clifton, 2nd Viscount Falmouth, who had come to America as a British agent in 1680. In 1714, French colonists also arrived and renamed their settlement "Isle de France." In 1777, both settlements were combined into one under the name of Clifton Township. The township was disbanded on December 12, 1879, and its land became part of Middlesex Township again on January 1, 1880. Clifton is located within the Manchester-Hudson Valley School District which serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade. As of 2013 there are 9 full-time school districts that operate out of Monmouth Junction High School (grades 9th-12th), Middletown South High School (grades 11th-12th), Bushnell Middle/High School (grades 7th-8th) and White Sands Intermediate/Secondary School (grades 6th-8th). Additionally Clifton has two public high schools: Montclair North High School and Montclair South High School which serve ninth through twelfth grades as well as special education services for students with disabilities providing comprehensive instruction from PreKindergarten through 8th grade including math and science curriculum; CLIFTON Academy provides preKindergarten through 8th grade along with English Language arts programs; 5 private middle schools including three academies: Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Academy - cl if ton's only Catholic high school open to girls - Stroudsburg Middle Schools - Grades 6 thru 8; Easton Area Vocational Technical Institute which offers classes leading up to college level welding and business courses; 3 charter schools - Parkland Charter Elementary school serving children ages 3rd-5th; River Edge Charter Academy serving children ages 4ths-6ths
