The township of Clifton was formed on May 10, 1784 byordering nine families to journey from Perth Amboy to build a Ferry Landing at present day Clifton Heights. In 1809 he sold land to Morristown for $5,000 and built a home there called Mount Pleasant which still stands today as one of NJ's most prominent landmarks. In 1834 John Dolan founded Dolan's Mills with land purchased from De Witt Clinton for $10 per acre. This village grew quickly due to its location near Routes 9 and 22 (now Interstate 95) and easy access to markets in Camden and Trenton. Dolan’s mills produced cotton yarn, flour, cheese and other goods until it closed during World War II due to wartime production restrictions. In 1898 Woodrow Wilson delivered his famous “Fourteen Points” speech at Rutgers University in Newark where he outlined plans for what would become America including social welfare programs that were later adopted into law by President Franklin D Roosevelt. In 1920 Clifton Townshipaltywas incorporated as part of Essex County when it was created from portions of Middlesex County east of Perth Amboy Avenue. At this time there were only 6 communities in Essex County with over 20k residents each including clifton township which had a population of just over 10K at that time!
Clifton was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Clifton and his wife Betsy. The first store was built on the corner of Front Street and Market Street. In 1821, a post office was established in Clifton and remained in operation until 1912. In 1834, the name of the town changed to Plainfield after Plainfield County, New Jersey. The population of Clifton peaked at 30,000 in 1920 but declined to 15,000 by 1930. The decline in population can be blamed on many factors including World War II and the Great Depression; however, there are also a number of reasons why the population may have decreased over time. One reason is that people may have moved away from the area because of its difficult living conditions or because of its lack of opportunities for economic development. Another reason is that technology has played an important role in changing how people live and work – for example, through advances in transportation which made it easier for people to move around and earn their income.
