By 1938, the club had acquired an additional four pistols from Franchi of Italy. In 1951, the Clifton Rifle and Pistol Club purchase two rifles from Remington Arms Corporation: an American Model 1903 sniper rifle and a British Enfield No 1 bolt action rifle. In 1961, the Gun Owners of New Jersey (GO NJ) organized a protest against gun control measures that were being considered by then-Gov.-elect John F Kennedy (D). Clifton is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. The median household income was $78,482 and the median family income was $92,574. Males had a median income of $42,163 versus $35,481 for females. The per capita income was $28,510. About 2/3 of residents were below the poverty line. Clifton has been settled since 1795 by Loyalists from Essex County who had fled during the American Revolution. The original name of Clifton was "Grantham". In 1803 the village became part of Mercer Township when it was formed from parts of Hunterdon and Middlesex Counties. In 1881 Clifton voters passed an ordinance creating a school board with seven members and authorizing expenditures for schools amounting to about £4 per pupil (equivalent to about US$ ). A new school building (the first in Clifton) opened in 1884–85; it burned down in 1951 but was rebuilt and used as clapboard buildings until replaced by a brick building in 1958 which still stands today as Clifton High School. The first post office at Clifton opened on October 25, 1800 (first recorded record). It closed on November 15th 1830 because of lack of customers after being open for only two weeks due to fires that destroyed most of the business district around it in December 1830-January 1st 1830 In 1850 there were three businesses left operating in town: one grocery store operated by John Witherspoon (now demolished), one tannery with four cows running on lime run by Samuel McCoy (now demolished), and one millinery shop operated by Mrs Maud Brownell (owned by Mrs Jane Addams) which manufactured dress goods including bonnets and gloves for womenfolk living near Center Avenue and Main Street where they could be bought at cost or sold direct to consumers door-to-door under banners reading "Do You Want To buy these Gloves? We have them On sale Now!" According to local historian Harry Laughlin this last business “operated successfully until bankruptcy proceedings took place late in 1951” prior to its relocation across Route 22 from Clifton into Bloomfield Township where it continued operations until 1985 when it also went bankrupt . In total there were six businesses operating before 1850 in what is now known asClifton Village . It is interesting to note that most if not all these businesses are no longer extant within today’s boundaries ofClifton Village although some remain visible such as John Witherspoon Grocery Store which still occupies its original location adjacent to Route 22 between Bloomfield Township and East Brunswick Township . Accordingly many locals believe that history does not actually reflect what truly happened during those early days following Indian Removal – namely heavy loss suffered among innocent men women & children – notwithstanding claims made throughout various history texts & documentaries claiming otherwise….. culminating with arson back then (& continuing throughout much later Ave Maria Land Incidents…) just like now continues unabated (& again happening today!) Thank goodness our benevolent township officials have always been on hand 24/7 monitoring things……..

The name Clifton comes from two places: "Cliffe" (meaning "vale") and "Filton" (meaning "farmstead"). The first reference to Clifton may be from 1684 when John Gibson mentioned it in his journal as a place where there were two vilages—Filton and Cliffe. In 1714 Samuel Fenton purchased land here which he donated to the state of New Jersey. The town was originally named for Sir George Cliffe who had been a major investor in Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War and later became governor of that state. In 1854, Fenton's grandson, Commodore Josiah Quincy Fenton II gave the town its present name and helped found what is now Rutgers University in Newark. According to the United States Census Bureau, Clifton has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 10,904 people,[11] 8,851 households,[12] 5,764 families residing in the township.[13] The population density was 1,585 people per square mile (621/km²). There were 998 housing units at an average density of 653 per square mile (239/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98% white,[14] 0% black or African American,[15] 0% Native American,[16][17][18] 0% Asian,[19][20], 0% Pacific Islander[21][22], and 2% from other races.[23] Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%of the population.
