Clifton was founded by Quakers in 1795 and became part of the Township of Camden in 1834. It was incorporated as a village in 1868. The name Clifton comes from the Deane family's farm which lay near the present-day village site. The first documented settlers were John and Elizabeth Deane who arrived on October 12, 1795 from England with their two small children and built a cabin on land that would later become known as "Deane's Meadow". The Deanes sold their property to Hugh Mercer in 1798 for $1,000 cash. In 1800, William Penn granted 44 acres (18 hectare) of this tract to John Dickinson for £200+. Dickinson named it "Dickinsonstown" after himself and his son Jonathan Dickinson Sr., who ran an inn there until his death in 1814. In 1834, Clifton became part of the newly formed township of Camden when it was organized by Order of Township Commissioners Samuel Tennent and James Caldwell. By 1840, McClennan’s Wharf had been built along the river’s edge on what is nowoperally known as “Old Bridge Road” just south of Center Avenue (now Borough Road). This wharf became one of Hunterdon County’s most important trading points during its early years due to its location close to both water transportation routes connecting Philadelphia with Atlantic City and Manhattan Beach via ferryboats – making it easily accessible for goods coming downriver from those areas as well as goods going upriver from Philadelphia or Trenton Junction. Clifton Village received its first municipal charter on June 3rd 1865 under Mayor George Wickersham Jr.. At that time it consisted of only three homes: Pastor Haddon's home at 404 Main Street; Mrs Phelps' home at 517 Main Street; and Mr Welshman's home at 621 Main Street which served as schoolhouse until 1889 when Mr Welshman donated land adjacent to his house for use as a public square which still stands today (now called Morrow Park). A new courthouse replaced the old one located on Seventh Avenue north side of Market Street between State House Square steps leading up to Pennsylvania Avenue – where then-Governor Andrew Johnson held his inauguration ceremonies on January 20th 1865 following his swearing-in ceremony on November 4th four days earlier – after two years construction began following recommendations made by commissioners Samuel Tennent & James Caldwell following riots taking place within theickrath community over bread rationing issues among other things! The cornerstone for this building was laid July 25th 1888 by Honorable George Noyes while Mayor Wickersham officiated! Reverend Drinkerupt dedicated this building thereby becoming Clifton’s firsttornitorialist! On May 9th 1901 clofnton won'ty boroughhood referendum beating rival towns likewickford 2 - 1 vote with nearly all residents votingyes according to unofficial results published minutes later that evening notwithstanding some rumors circulating throughoutthecommunity about irregularities including ballots being doctored!!! however these Rumors didn't die down until much later when open records were requested thru exceptions given under law governing Municipal Elections - proving once again how honest & fair these local elections are... !!!!!

In 1834–35, Charles Sargent built a small mill on what is now South Street near where it meets West Street in central Clifton Township. The mill operated until 1840; it later belonged to Samuel Morse and was used as a training ground for his wireless telephone company. The population ofCliftonsville grew rapidly after 1800 due mainly to migration from nearby Somerset County (then part of Pennsylvania). By 1850 there were over 1,000 residents living inCliftonsville proper and adjacent areas including Easton (now Allston), Newton Centre (now Northampton), Hackettstown (now Easton), Spring Valley (now Sayreville), Whitemarsh (now Rahway) and Bound Brook Township lying between Newark Liberty International Airport and clifTON village located along I-76 about 10 miles northeast of Trenton NJ
