Clifton, New Jersey is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The first Europeans to settle in Clifton were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1632. The name of the town was derived from the clif family of trees that grew on the area's high ground. In 1714, the British Crown granted land comprising present-day Clifton to Sir George Carteret and Hartley Usher. The town's population was 3 people in 1714 and it did not grow until after America's independence from Great Britain was recognized in 1776. After the American Revolution, Clifton became an important center for trade with both Great Britain and Europe. European settlers arrived here in such numbers that by 1820 there were more than 100 families living inCliftontownship and its outlying areas. In 1824, two years after his appointment as mayor of Newark Township by Governor William Paterson, Nicholas Jansen purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land at what is now Highwood Avenue near what is now Penns Landing for $10 per acre. Jansen named his new township Jansenstown after himself and developed it into one of the most successful German-American agricultural communities in North America during this time period. Jansenstown continued to thrive even when many of its original German-American farmers left for better opportunities back east following World War II; however, they gradually lost touch with their old community until very recently when descendants gathered together to celebrate 75th anniversary of Jansenstown’s founding last year In 2016 local historian John Pappas organized a reunion event which attracted over 150 people including some descendants

Clifton, New Jersey is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 7,735 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Middlesex County after Newark and the tenth most populous town in New Jersey. Clifton is also home to Monmouth University. The first mention of Clifton comes from an early medieval document known as "Norman de Clarendon's De Excavacionibus Lacunarum" which was written in 1087 and refers to a small village on the border of Middlesex and Sussex counties called Clarendonium. In 1664, when William Penn founded Pennsylvania and moved his people westward along the Delaware River, he decided to locate what would become Clifton Township on land that he had purchased from Hugh Petersforde of Sussex County. The township was formed on April 14, 1701, by order of Governor George Washington while Philadelphia was under construction. In 1851, whenNJ Congressional Districts were established following the Republican Party's win at the national election that year, Clifton became part of New York's 21st Congressional District represented by John A. Huston (R-Monmouth). However Huston resigned in 1857 to run for office in Indiana and died before being re-elected to Congress soClifton again became part of NJ’s 21st Congressional District until it was abolished on January 3el9th 1970 due to redistricting following passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). As a result of this change in congressional representation, all but one seat from NJ’s 21st District went up for auction on November 5th 1970 with Monmouth University taking sole possession of this seat making it available for sale once again through its president Dr Clifford Berryman who offered it for $3 million cash or about $105 per day over five years beginning February 6th 1971 until July 15th 1979 when it sold back to NJ’s21st District residents Dick Thornburgh (D-Camden) and Geraldine Ferraro (D-Atlantic City) becoming one of only two towns within New Jersey everto have its congressional district abolished completely by Redistricting Commission action; both others being Seaside Heights which lost its own congressional district as well as every other township within Ocean county including Atlantic City which merged into Camden County during this time period As a result of these changes in state government and local government structure, there are now three towns operating within Monmouthshire - Clifton Township; Brickleigh Township; & Eastwood Borough - each with their own governing body made up entirelyof elected officials including a Mayor/Councilor/Vice President & Treasurer/Postmaster /Historian with no equal representation among themselves ; each municipality having their own police force independent from any other municipality within Monmouthshire . A total population growth rates across all municipalities since 1990 has been 2%. This growth rate is especially pronounced within Brickleigh Township where populations have increased by 26% since 1990 while Population Growth Rates for all other municipalities have ranged from 12% To 43%. clifton township currently has more than 1 MILLION people living there!!
Clifton was one of the first towns in New Jersey to be founded. It was named for Colonel John Clifton, a surveyor and soldier who helped lay out the state. The town began settlement in 1764, when Major James Callender and his family built a cabin on the rise overlooking the Monmouth River. By 1766, Clifton had a smallpox outbreak that left many dead or sick. In response, Captain Benjamin Franklin organized a militia to fight the disease. The town quickly grew, and by 1774 it had a population of around 100 people. A sawmill was erected at this time, and soon enough Clifton became an important transportation link between points within New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In 1802, Colonel John Clifton donated land to make room for what is now Princeton University. The town's population peaked at over 1,500 in 1825 but declined thereafter due to natural causes such as epidemics and war losses. New Brunswick County was formed from part of Hunterdon County in 1814; however, Clifton continued to decline until its final disappearance in 1848 when it merged with Middlesex County into what is now Newark County.
