He designed a gun that could be fired by firing small pellets at a Target. These pellets would ricochet off of any surface, so they couldn’t be focused on one spot and hit the target directly. Conte’s design was soon surpassed by another inventor, Samuel Colt, who developed the Gatling Gun. The Gatling Gun was much more powerful and able to fire much more pellets per minute than Conte’s original design. This made Gatling Guns better suited for real-world warfare, as they could easily kill enemies with ease instead of just bouncing them off of surfaces few times before exploding or failing to explode altogether. The popularity of BB guns began to grow in the late 1800s and into the 1900s. This was mostly due to the development of airguns, which allowed people to shoot smaller pellets without having to use a large amount of energy to do so. Airguns also became easier and cheaper to produce over time, making them more popular among civilians and military alike.

From this engine starting up to daily commuter service within town began what would become one of NJ's most important industries – transportation and communication for central New Jersey
