Cliffside Park, NJ is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 17,713 at the 2010 census. As of the 2016 Census there were 18,521 people in Cliffside Park. The area now known as Cliffside Park was first settled by Dutch immigrants in 1675 and was part of Newark Township until it became part of Middlesex County in 1732. It boundaries changed several times over the years, but always included most of what is now Cliffside Park including present-day Southwick and East Brunswick townships. The first gun case built in what is today Cliffside Park took place on December 3rd, 1800 when Nicholas Fenton bought land from Samuel White for $225 dollars. The first store in what is today Cliffside Park was opened by John Cramer on March 1st, 1809. By 1824 there were six stores open within a radius of four miles of where Cliffside Park now stands. In 1834 local residents voted to form their own township and renamed it after George Washington which they did because he had been Commander-in-Chief during the American Revolution and Ridgefield Township had been renamed Princeton after King George III’s new capital city (the original Princeton). On July 1, 1924, this area became part of new Jersey City when it was divided into two parts – Downtown Jersey City and Teaneck – following municipal election results that showed overwhelming majorities for Mayor Raymond Kelly’s Democratic Party over incumbent Republican John Lapp’s Republican Party ticket. Cliffside Park has experienced many changes over its history including becoming one of the most diverse areas in NewJersey; experiencing rapid growth during World War II due to military housing; becoming an all-black township after integration during 1965; declining population after 2000 as a result of suburban growth; recent gentrification spurred by lower property taxes within town limits; consolidation with nearby Newark due to rising property values; reopening as a public recreation area following citizen petitions in 2013 As one component of Downtown Jersey City's revitalization effort since 2001, Mayor Chris Christie declared Cliffside Park an official city reserve on October 10th 2001 through executive order n 5495/2001 "Order establishing designation for certain parcels within Council District 2 as cultural significance."
