Cliffside Park is a small town in New Jersey, United States. Although it has been shrinking for the last few decades, it still retains some of the architecture and beauty that made it a favorite destination for tourists in the 1920s and 1930s. Cliffside Park is located on the banks of the Delaware River, about 15 miles east of Philadelphia. The town was named after landowner Daniel Clifton who purchased it from Jameson and other settlers in 1820. The first people to inhabit Cliffside Park were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants near what is now Market Street. In 1824, Dutchman Hendrick de Vries purchased 8 acres (3 hectares) of land at Cliffside Park from Daniel Clifton for $5 per acre (1/4 pound). From this purchase, de Vries became one of the original landowners in Cliffside Park. He built a house on his property which he called "Hendrik's Haus". In 1829, John Atherton bought 10 acres (4 hectares) of land at Cliffside Park from Hendrick de Vries for $10 per acre (1/2 pound). Atherton began to build up his holdings by buying more and more land until he had all but doubled his original purchase size. By 1830, Atherton had erected several houses on his new farmstead which he called "Athertons' Farm" or simply "AtherTONS". The name gradually changed to "Cliff Side" because no one could find a better place to live than where they stood! In 1846, Abraham Lincoln adjoining 11 acres (5 hectares) of millrights belonging to Phebe Welles sold him 2 lots at Cliff Side with an understanding that if he were elected President then he would sell these lands back to Welles at public auction as part of his platform issues regarding statehood for New Jersey during the campaign season – something that never happened! In 1850-1851 when tracks ran through present day CliffSide park following their journey from Camden downriver they created quite a stir among those living along both banks as there was concern over possible development into an agricultural center with railways running through it! It wasn't until 1861 when entrepreneur Nelsonshaw Parsons developed plans for a canal through present day cliff side parkland - this canals opening allowed Cliffordians access not only to Philly but also points further inland including Allentown & Hazleton NJ without havingto leave their homes! As commerce grew along Canals #2 & 3; shops sprang up everywhere selling everything FROM JEWELRY TO FOOD TO CLOTHING AND MUCH MORE! Finally becoming accessible by everyone not just those living within 1 mile radius was HUGEprogress!!
