Cliffside Park, NJ is a township located in the southern reaches of New Jersey on the border of Middlesex County and Union County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,182. Cliffside Park has been inhabited by people since at least 8500 BC. The first European to visit Cliffside Park was Jacques Cartier in 1535, who passed through on his way from Canada to France. The area that now makes up Cliffside Park was originally part of what is now Union Township; it was taken over by Middlesex County when it was formed in 1849. The first knife made in Cliffside Park was a crude stone-handled dagger found near the current site of the township's high school in 1892. By 1903, there were more than 10 knife manufacturers operating in Cliffside Park and manufacturing knives for both personal use and commercial purposes. Many local residents started selling their knives directly to consumers or through local merchants. One such business owner, John Ahern, became known as "The Knife King" because he manufactured more than 100 different types of knives during his time as proprietor. In 1929, Art Donovan opened a small restaurant called Donovan's Cafeteria on Main Street near where today’s High School stands (then known as South Brunswick High School). In 1939, Donovan merged with two other small businesses to form Donovan's Seafood Restaurants which would remain one of the town's most successful businesses until its closure in 1984. During World War II many families withdrew their children from school so that they could serve their country; consequently, few students attended public schools within Cliffside Park proper after 1945. However, some students did attend private schools within walking distance of home and these pupils continued to attend public school until grades 7-8 were served by private schools starting at grade 5th grade beginning in 1960-61 (this change occurred due to fiscal restrictions placed upon municipalities by state legislators). In 1865, James Auld founded the First National Bank there. In 1870, David Bogan bought land adjoining Cliffside Park from Haverhill for $10 per acre. The first post office was established in this location on July 10, 1872. In 1876, Wm Moulton built a cabin near present-day intersection of West Street and North Avenue to serve as a hotel and restaurant known as "The White House" until it burned down in 1908. In 1902, Frank Jaffe donated land to build his estate which became known as Jaffe's Meadow after him. Today's shopping plaza called Gateway Plaza developed around this property during the late 1960s and 1970s; it forms one end of what is now NJ Transit's South Station complex on Market Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues (now part of Iselin Boulevard). On May 16th 1924 – three days before America went into World War II – the Cliffside Park Savings Bank opened with $5 million dollars deposited by American citizens all over country due to regulations placed on banks during that time by the Federal Reserve Board through their moratorium on Open Banking rules implemented during President Woodrow Wilson’s term as president; these were repealed by Franklin D Roosevelt following passage of legislation referred to as “the New Deal” During World War II many businesses closed because production was diverted to war plants elsewhere including Jaffe's Meadow which continued operations while other properties were used for military housing such as Fort Monmouth beachfront home used by General MacArthur and other high ranking officersCommanding Ulysses S Grant's Army Corps of Engineersand later used by various Marine unitsduring WWII (see History Of Ft Monmouth Beach) .
