Cliffside Park, NJ was a small town in New Jersey that played an important role in holster history. The town first began to develop as a gunsmithing and holster-making center in the early 1800s. By 1892, the community had over 100 shops and businesses. Holsters were one of the many products made in Cliffside Park. In 1876, local resident John Dolan founded the J.D. Nolan company which would become one of the most well-known holster companies in America. The company produced a wide variety of holsters for both civilian and military use throughout its years of operation. In 1904, Dolan donated his entire business to the Cliffside Park Historical Society which continues to operate it today. Cliffside Park is home to numerous museums and galleries which offer historical artifacts related to holster history including the J.D Nolan Company Museum, Cliffside Park Armory Museum, and John Dolan Company Museum Collection.)

The early history of Cliffside Park is reflective of its location on the banks of the Passaic River. In 1795, Captain John Stevens explored what would become Cliffside Park and named it for his home parish in Sussex County, England—Cliff House at Passaic. In 1812, Thomas Jefferson purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) along the river from Isaac Watts for £3 per acre In 1835, three years after NJ became a state, $5 million worth of land grant was given to create "the most beautiful piece of country in all our Liberties" as Cliffside Park became - an ode to rural America. By 1850, construction had begun on two large brick Palmer House homes which were completed in 1853 and designed by architect Andrew Johnson Haggan Two decades later in 1870 work began on new homes when Congressman William McKinley donated land to be developed into a township including Cliffside Park. Because McKinley's donation was contingent upon passage of a bill ratifying NJ's admission into Confederation as a United States territory - this act finally happened on November 3rd 1870 with Clifford Township being formed out of parts of Ramsey and Edison townships The first mayoralty for Cliffside Park took place when George Biddle served from 1907-1909; he was succeeded by Haddon Sundrell who served until 1927 when he resigned due to term limits which meant that James Phelan could take office instead As time passed and more people moved into what would become Cliffside Park - jobs opportunities opened up which attracted manufacturers such as Jens Weidmann who built an insurance company plant there between 1911-1920/21 or 1919-1924; also employed were many teachers including Mrs. Anna McGrath who taught at Hoboken High School from 1915 until her retirement in 1958 As well as residents like Harry Wexler who managed local grocery stores until his death in 1984 after 64 yearsservice

Cliffside Park was first settled in 1785 as "Haddonfield", and it was renamed to its current name on November 5, 1810 after landowner Nicholas Cliff. The town became a borough on April 14, 1898, and then an unincorporated community on December 16 of that year. On February 20, 1912, the borough merged with Elizabeth Township to form the city of Newark. The city's industries have included manufacturing and shipbuilding; however these have all since left for other locations in North America or Europe. In recent years there has been strong growth in both educational and cultural institutions within the community which has helped make it one of the most vibrant places in New Jersey
