Cliffside Park, New Jersey is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 37,856 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Newark-Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Located on the county's southern border and east of Newark, Cliffside Park was annexed by Newark in 1914. Cliffside Park was named for its Cliff overlooking Hackensack River valley and its parkland consisting of woodlands, meadows, ponds and a small lake. In 1846 William Haddon built a gristmill on the present-day corner of Clinton Avenue and Ridge Road in what is now Cliffside Park Township. In 1847–48 John Pemberton also built a mill in what is now Cliffside Park Township; it still stands today as Pemberton Mill Ruins. The first post office opened in 1855; it was renamed Clifftopville after then-president Ulysses S. Grant visited there that year to celebrate American victory over Mexico at Palo Alto de la Frontera (now Palo Alto). The name change may have been inspired by nearby Clifftop Heights (then called High Water Hill), which had been developed as an amusement park since 1851 by entrepreneur Nicholas Astor IV and father-in-law Samuel Morse Jr.. In 1916 Clifford Ladd bought land comprising much of what is now Cliffside Park from his father for $5 per acre – one third of all remaining undeveloped township property – making it one of the earliest township municipalities formed in New Jersey during World War I when most townships were created through annexation proceedings following conflicts between military forces occupying various portions of the state during that conflict including those located within today's Bergen County limits including parts of both East Orange andcliffsided park). Ladd became mayor pro tem for Bergen County under Governor James Buchanan before being elected governor himself in November 1966; he served two terms until his death in 1974 prior to being succeeded by Assemblyman Seymour Minsky who served four terms without interruption until his own death in February 1984. However, this number decreased as development took place in nearby Westcliff and Clifton Heights. In 1924, Cliffside Park became an incorporated town with a population of 707 people; however, it reverted to its original form after two years due to lack of approval from the state government. In 1951–1952 when Morristown experienced a rapid growth due to various military bases being erected there during World War II; the town annexed parts of unincorporated communities located east of Uptown (including Asbury Heights) including much smaller community called White Sands which had noPost Office or ZIP code because it was part of Morristown Township! Therefore most residents still identify themselves as residents of eitherMorristown or Asbury Heights even though they live just outside their borders!
