On February 24, 1870, Asbury Heights grew rapidly around corner on Broad Street between Seventh Avenue and Tenth Avenue due to waves of Irish immigrants arrivving from Northern Ireland who had come for work on Wall Street during the Panic Of 1873. Many people in Asbury Heights started businesses such as groceries stores and dry goods stores (what are now known as “epoxy” shops). One business owner in particular Augustus Haughton opened what are now considered to be America’s first department store – The Gilded Age Store – on Broad Street between Seventh Avenue and Tenth Avenue (now home to Macy’s). In 1893 Asbury Heights achieved its charter status as a municipality under the laws passed by New Jersey state legislators at a special session convened to revise county government regulations after William McKinley’s takeover of the Ulysses S Grant presidency caused chaos across state government structures nationwide. With this new status came increased responsibilities for municipalities including powers over public education; fire protection; water supply; regulation of Streets Department bussing (the use and number of vehicles allowed on each street); establishment or revision of rates for various types(s)of services furnished by municipal governments; development or improvement thereof; enacting such other measures as may be necessary or proper for carrying into effect all resolutions passed at any special session concerning local concerns submitted thereto by majorities vote upon motion duly seconded without debate or amendment thereto duly recorded publickly at each place where said votes were taken...In 1897 Asbury Heights annexed portions of Bound Brook Township (present-day East Brunswick Township) making it one municipality with two different sets tax rates: one set for residents within boundaries defined by Bound Brook Township authorities while citizens located eastwardwithinAsbury Heights received a rate based upon their residency within boundaries defined by Asbury Heights authorities only).
