Cliffside Park is a small borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Cliffside Park was formed on February 17, 1874 from part of the township of Hackensack and parts of the townships of North Arlington and West Hackensack. The name comes from Cliff's Edge which overlooks the park. The first settler in Cliffside Park was George Cline who came to America in 1795. He built a cabin on an old millstream near what is now Broadway and Summit Avenues. In 1814, Isaac Bachman set up shop in a log cabin at 7th Street and Maple Avenue (now Mapleton Avenue). Bachman became one of the earliest immigrants to New Jersey. He arrived with his family from Germany and started farming near Rahway Creek in Middlesex County. His farm included land that forms much of today's Cliffside Park area. In 1837, John Larkin set up shop on what is now Second Avenue between Fourth and Fifth Streets (now Atlantic Boulevard). Larkin became one of the leading businessmen in town after starting out as a tailor. He also engaged in lumbering, shipbuilding, manufacturing goods such as cheesecloth, pickles and onions, some agricultural pursuits such as growing wheat or potatoes for export and dairy production including creamery products and cheeses until his death in 1897. In 1874, following passage of the National Defense Act which gave President Ulysses S Grant power over military affairs within American borders., Clifford Township – thenHackensack Township – merged into Bergen County to form Cliffside Park Borough NJ effective February 17th 1874 under Mayor Nathan Shriver Sr.. At its incorporation Bridgeport mills were closed reducing local employment opportunities but this did not stop local businesses from forming around services like bakery ovens used by bakeries all over town during those early days prior to World War I when large factories opened up throughout NYC & NJ due largely to government investment/prompted migration!
