The first settler in what would become Carteret Township was Abel Parsons who arrived November 5th, 1775 from West Egg on Long Island with his family. He built a cabin on what is now Broadway Avenue near where he lived until his death in 1805. In 1800 Samuel French erected a mill on Millstream Street just east of present day Borough Hall Road; this flour mill remains operational today as Frenchman's Mill Museum & Brewery Company Inc., doing business as Old French Mill Museum & Brewery Company Inc.. In 1802 John Purdy purchased land along Third Street south of present day Borough Hall Road from Amos Wright for $637 – this land later became known as Purdy Park after him; also located here were two gristmills which manufactured flour for local residents before being replaced by modern mills during the early 20th century: One continued operation into the 1990s while another converted to residential use in 2009 but is still open to visitors today (see history below). Carteret was a small borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. It was part of the Princeton–Camden Township government until 1784, when it became a separate township. The population at the 2010 census was 1,895. The first Europeans to visit Carteret were Frenchmen in 1624 and 1627. A grant of land by King George III in 1686 to trustees named John Carteret and Samuel Pemberton allowed for continued English settlement in the area. In 1800 Nicholas Weems founded a gristmill on what is now Pope Street which equipped many farmers with mills throughout western New Jersey during the early 19th century including Nathanial Baynes (1798-1874). In 1814 about two dozen residents took an oath of allegiance to George Washington as part of his inauguration festivities as President of the United States; they formed "New York Company" which later became known as "Washington & Clark". In 1830 Isaac Nourse organized a school district that included much of eastern Morris County including parts of what is now Carteret Borough. On October 15th, 1870, three years afterNJ's statehood, Cartaret became one municipality within Morristown Township when all but 2 wards were annexed into that township from vecinity Carteret Boroughs Northumberland Park Southward.
